I've got to be fair to MCW? here. They did upgrade there hardware this year, sort of... They put a lovely new managed switch in, after the big power cut blew up the old one. Now with the new one you can see all the problems, lol. 10.0.0.1 I believe the IP address was, not very useful from the browser but the telnet gave you event logs which at least told u why it wasn't working...

I'm going to miss typing that address - plus 1.1.1.1 in. As for that powercut - everyone was on a high that night. Rivalled the earthquake just about lol. I remember been woken up by Kim.

that internet sucksed last year.. it was fine in the mornings, or late at night, becaue mot people were not ther.. but come about 4-5pm when people came back from uni, download speeds went from about 300kb/s for me, to about 20. And playing WoW i had a latency of about 91m that shot to about 10000ms. it was horrible. then for the first half of the year it kept locking me out. and all year constant disconnects.

i hope they sort it out for the new year. im living in rented house with some mates.. i intend to get the fastest service we can since 3 of u play online games pretty frequently.

    we need the internets :[

Has the internet service at Storthes got better there ever since the countless ammount of petitions I read, struggling to improve it.

As a geek at heart I'll find it to settle down without decent internet!

If not what it like in I'm the private accommodation, eg Aspley Hall, Snow Island etc
Aspley Hall internet is superb it's just on all the time and fast! never had any problems with it.

Ok, reading the forums and afew other boards/petitions etc... I contacted the halls myself, and the internet provider for Storthes - which found out to be really good news :

"Thank you for your message and in reply the internet at Storthes is undergoing a complete up grade.

New internal switches has already been installed, making the internal network fast, and a 100mbt lease line has been ordered and scheduled to be installed in the coming weeks.

The net effect is that there will be a whole uncontended 100 Mbt bandwidth at Storthes Hall, running across a fast internal network.

Trust this answers your query and sets your mind at rest."

In english this means that the nets been upgraded to 100mbit connection accross the halls, (not sure how much mb each student will receive) but download speeds and latency/ping will be a lot lower (0-5ms), aswell as extremely fast downloads - hopefully!, so looks like the internet has finally been sorted, many thanks to all the students in the past years to complain about the connection making it better for first year students now!

Wow sounds like there talking out there arses again as normal.

100 Mbps line is the sort of thing that ISP's are starting to offer individuals. Now I've only done my sums very quickly so I could be entirely out on this but the resultant net speed per person at Storthes presuming everyone is on at the same time would be somewhere in the region of that of dial-up internet around 56 kbps. That’s not taking into account that some people are at a greater distance from the server (Yes singular) and the maze of switches that need to be connected through to get as far as the internet.

I mean new switches don't make much of a difference at most they would be running gigabit switches which I’m guessing they won't be and even if they were most wouldn't notice anyway. Network speed wasn’t that bad to be honest transferring files over the network was as quick as I expected.

The problem was never the switches in a sense rather the layout and configuration of them and the bottle necking of the server.

In addition to the bottle necking there servers are simple incapable of handling simultaneous connections from upwards of 500 people let alone 1500.

I'm sure there making an effort but the system doesn't need "upgrading" rather scrapping and a new one putting in. One 100 Mbps line to handle 1500 people is ridiculous..... My high school had two 100 Mbps lines to handle 400 computers. It’s about time they actually made a concerted effort to improve the system, rather than token gestures to appease Storthes hall and allow them to continue operating as the sole provide.

Right ok sorry about the rant but, I had this argument with the Managing Director of MCW a few time last year, it’s nice to know they've listened.

It makes you wonder what they were running on before though. I'd say that it's one 100mbps line per block to be honest resulting in a speed of 2mbps per student, which sounds about right.

lol yeah but not everyone has moved in yet, its like it every year, first week the net runs quite well, then its all down hill.

Last year though at Ashenhurst, didn't have the net for a few weeks because they had ballsed everything up.

Hey everyone from top floor of Myers A flat 8 Storthes Hall!

Just moved in yesterday and had a fantastic first day/night!

I can comfirm the internet has been IMPROVED dramatically from the last few years.

Busy times like in the early evening it slowed down to 2-3mbit which even my nerdy standards is not slow, quiet times like now 7am its running at nice steady 10mbit+

    As proof my friends!!

The 5GB limit a MONTH needs to be changed however as it's silly ammount as some peoples halls in London/Manchester get 5GB limit a DAY. I will be paying the extra money for the extra 10GB package but still...

Well you never know they might have changed things....... that said it was always good for the first few months....... All I can say is your upload rates are crap however and still being stuck with the caps is bad. That said however it may be worth checking if its recording or not. There was a problem last year with the monitoring software which they didn't notice.

Bear in mind not everyone has moved in yet - nor will everyone be on at the same time as a lot of people will be socialising/sleeping at those times, especially on the first day.
