I think the American options sounds like a great idea for fulfilling the requirements.
I did General XVI in second year to fulfil my modern requirements and it was AWESOME. It's America 1780 - 1880, an excellent period to study and very coherent, with lots of interesting, broad themes that stretch over the whole period (e.g. Native Americans, the debate over slavery, questions over the power of the federal vs state govts). If you're a bit meh about which modern option to take I'd really recommend it.

Any thoughts on whether Brit II or III is more interesting or a better intro paper?
