Yeah, Panic! (I know they dropped the !) new album isn't actually too bad. Unlike most emo bands they've got some talent and can write good lyrics:

Speaking of good lyrics, try The Smiths and Billy Bragg. Neither are to everyones tastes but its worth a couple of listens to see if you like them.
Yes, if you liked the Kirsty Maccoll, try Billy Bragg. Then listen to Wallis Bird, but you'd be off on a genre tangent by then.

I second the vote for the Smiths as well, if you don't already know them start something like Pretty Girls Make Graves, or the Boy With The Thorn in His Side.

Rearly, I'd start of with This Charming Man (for the Lyrics) Handsome Devil or Oscillate Wildly....

Oh yeah, and Billys a genius, just forget the fact he can't sing.

Those are good too, especially Charming Man as an intro song. Handsome Devil is my favourite song, ever ever ever.

I'd love to be a singer, but I can't sing. Billy always makes me want to give it a crack.

Yo La Tengo -- I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass

Great album name; funky cover; and very eclectic band!
Funny; Yo La Tengo were the first band I thought of when i read this thread.

Also try Boards of Canada - Geogaddi and Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago.
