lol clearly i know nothing about hitch hiking, so im just spamming up your thread! it seems like your pretty fine with it (compared to me, just no way jose) so go for it!
and if you got a partner, safety wise its not gunna be too bad
    i apologise for spamming
Don't apologise, you made perfectly valid points.

I probably wouldn't do it because tbh I couldn't be arsed with the hassle.

P.S. I did think this was going to be about Will Smith :shifty:

I guess picking up a pair of guys is probably more likely to be dangerous for the driver than picking up a guy and a girl. I'm not sure why they wouldn't pick up two girls though.

Anyone read the relevant Point Horror book?
I guess so. Then again alot of truck drivers won't pick women up as they're afraid they'll be seen as doing something dodgy if the woman later disapears. And yes, as a man I've still yet to hitch as one of two women so I've no idea how easy/hard it is:p:

anyway, hitch hiking is great. i did it around ireland with my girlfriend and the longest we waited anywhere was 20 minutes, people were friendly and knowledgeable and generally took us miles out of their way. a few people bought us food, and some people gave us money. we got from galway to waterford in about 4 hours, which is 200 km and considering we weren't exactly rushing that seems pretty good. everyone said that they felt safer picking us up as a couple, rather than solo
Someone needs to post all that on www.streeturchinsandhobos.com

Go for it! I'd love to do something like that, and because it's well organised and you're with a partner it sounds like a chance not to be missed. You'll never get a chance to do something so fun and interesting and so safely again. Uni is all about doing things like that and trying new things. I'm jealous!

That sounds a bit like the sponsered prison break that people do round here. You have to get as far as you can in a certain amount of time but you can't use your own transport or pay any money so you have to walk hitchhike etc. Apparently the furthest someone got was Hong Kong by hitchiking to Heathrow and blagging his way into the cargo hold of a plane. I have never hitchhiked and never picked up a hitchiker apparently my mums gran used to pick up stoned IOW festival goers all the time. I think i would only do it with my boyfriend and if i felt safe.

Sign me up for that. I'd love to jump in a lorry and get across the border in to France.

i hitch hiked 20 miles alone today with no problems, a single woman even picked me up which was something i wasn't expecting. if i could drive i would pick up hitch hikers because generally there is very little reason not to. here is a wholesome anecdote to encourage hitching:

my girlfriend's dad was once driving to work and saw a hitch hiker by the side of the road and so stopped to pick him up. as he got closer he saw the hitcher had a shaved head and looked butch and violent, but decided since he'd stopped he might as well give the guy a lift, even though he was nervous. when the guy got in the car and said very quietly where he was headed, they drove off in silence, the driver feeling horrendously uncomfortable. eventually he asked why the hitch hiker was going to wherever he was going, and the guy replied "i'm going to the buddhist retreat to become a monk"

never judge a book by it's cover
