Read The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath before you go. I don't know why but it always makes me want to go to New York and kill myself.

You'll be fine, it's no more dangerous than the average english city. I'm actually going to do the same in september.

New York has a bad rep, but is actually incredibly safe provided you take the necessary precautions that would in any big city.

Basically, is this wise/safe?

I want some adventure and don't mind being alone either! I was planning to stay at a hostel for a month and travel around from there. I want the time alone away from here and think it will be beneficial, it'll stop me going mad around here!

Am I being really stupid? Or is it actually alright?
New york is the safest large city in the US. What are you worried about?

thats good to hear! I'm slightly worried about being by myself, as a young and relatively vulnerable woman and the whole rape/mugging factor. I'd be the same in any other big city really.
hopefully I'll be alright!

Well I think you can go (almost) anywhere on your own and be okay as long as you're sensible - eg:
- don't go out in the dark/early morning
- only walk in well populated areas
- take major walking routes - no short cuts down alley ways/quiet pathways
- Make sure you get to know some people so that there is always someone who knows your whereabouts and when you're expected home
-Keep in touch with family back home

I spent 7 months from home and I was okay - just be sensible and careful.
where were you for 7 months?
