Dude, no. Generalizations about colleges are always wrong.
Could not agree more! Cambridge and individual colleges are what you make of them. My son is studying Economics at Christ's, loves it and does not fit the generalisation!

Yeah, they'll start early but I reckon the email could come any time before 5pm.

I didn't get pooled so it's either a straight out accept or reject.

sometimes a college will look in the pool but then decide to take one of their own applicants after all so it's not easy to judge. However some college take few or no pool applicants and some take quite a lot. You can see which colleges these are by looking at the published admission statistics.

If you're in the pool they'll tell you so.

But most people hear if they've been pooled or not when they receive their acceptance or rejection letter don't they ?

No, but they do sometimes look in the Pool to benchmark their applicants against the others, before making a final decision about them. So a college may pool applicants C and D to see how they measure up against applicants pooled by other colleges, and might decide to take both out again to make them an offer, or they might make one an offer after all, but take someone out of the Pool instead of the other, or find two applicants they consider to be stronger and therefore reject C and D, who could still be picked up by another college.
