FSG will spend money that is available. Rodgers is clearly looking for a top striker as Sturridge is injury prone, he's an automatic starter but if he does an RVP and missed a third of the season to injury you need somebody who can come in on his own and work while be a good partner for Sturridge. Considering Falcao and Costa worked well, surely Falcao and Sturridge can work similarly well. I think Sturridge has good link up play anyway.
Yea I'm just surprised we're not banking for next window? It's obvious we need another striker but 20mil on a one year loan deal?

Yea I agree about Strurrdge being able to partner another striker.

Falcao and Costa worked in the sense that Costa was at that point a 'bad footballer' (a la Dirk Kuyt etc) and just did all of the ***** work.

Sturridge's link up play is 'okay'. Falcao's is passable too. I do doubt that they'd build up any kind of true striking partnership. Sturridge and Suarez didn't have a partnership and still scored 50+ between them so it's not as if a partnership is necessary.

But there are definite concerns that Falcao and Daniel could get in each other's ways. Suarez is much more of a creator than Falcao, whereas Daniel and Radamel are both pure goalscorers.

Costa wasn't just the ***** for Falcao, he was a link up man.

Sturridge's link up play can be majestic at times. Honestly think his link up play is no worse than Alexis Sanchez e.g.

I can see the point with Falcao and Sturridge being in each others ways. Probably will play the diamond against weaker teams.

If Falcao does play to his true potential, which is (imo, and I said this AGES ago on here) as the best true number 9 in the world, then we'll win the title, I have no doubt. We are too strong now in other areas for the squad/defence to **** up like they did with Suarez last season.

I wouldn't disagree with best number 9 in the world, but you'd still only have the third best squad in the league. You'd be up there definitely, and could win it of course but City and Chelsea would still be favourites. No chance of being runaway winners.

Sturridge has great technique but he's really too much of an individualist to be a consistently fantastic link up player. I agree that at times he's truly majestic, out of this world. He dwells on the ball too much.

Probably against the tough teams as well based on last season.

Obviously we've had this discussion before but a) we have a manager that vastly overachieves with our squad, and b) we have a style of play that, as Jam is so keen to emphasise, is perfectly suited to winning leagues. This year our stronger (read: 'not retarded') defence will only boost that.

Anyway it's just conjecture till we get him, and no-one knows if he'll play like the world's best 9 anyway.

Maybe watch him play more often? I agree that he can be selfish and when he's in an attacking position he wants to try and score but he regularly runs into the channels (mainly the right) and gets involved to try and set up his team mates. Plenty of examples of that in the game against Southampton. If anything, he should've been in the box more often against them.

So annoying that Man Utd have had such an easy start to this season. Would've loved it if they dropped a ton of points to begin with. Only 12 days for them to get some more signings - their squad looks so average to me.

I really hope it's on loan rather than permanent.

On paper on playing ability alone, he'd be perfect for us. Strong, quick, talented and a set piece specialist. But he's now been at 3 big clubs (and the Italian national team) and struggled to get the right attitude. I don't think he'd do well playing second fiddle to Sturridge either..

Not on loan, permanent deal. Tbf he hasn't done much to bring the spotlight to him recently. Bit risky with him but he's a good finisher, like you said, has pace and great physicality. Sturridge and balo partnership I guess then

He won't be second fiddle. Rodgers will fit the both of them together. He'll probably play Balotelli on the wing or use the diamond of last season in a 4-3-3. There's also 3atb formations with Henderson/Sterling as the RWB and Moreno as the LWB. As you have a lot of CBs who are of decent quality, you probably have the best backup CBs in the league after Chelsea in Agger and Skrtel so 3atb formations does make some sense, unlike your rivals in Manchester who play it with no good backups to accommodate 3 players when one of them is not even there.

I'm pretty sure that Rodgers will change to 3atb in the next few months to initially accommodate the two strikers.

Yea being reported everywhere now. I guess due to his age, even if we sign for £20mil, we should be able to flog for around that fee in a year or two. Only issue is his big wages but if we can make it heavily incentivised then I'd be okay with it.

I don't think two strikers is Rodgers' preferred formation or style - he just had to do it because who do you drop out of Sturridge and Suarez? I think Balotelli would come in and play on a flank, similar to how Sterling does and aim to head towards the goal. No doubt he'd play in games against easier teams where we're expected to win but get dropped for the big games where we want to be more compact and press a lot?

If Balotelli can handle the rotation, I'm okay with it. He fits the bill of being able to play as a sole striker, partnered with Sturridge or on the wing. The only reason I ruled it out was because of his attitude, what Rodgers said earlier in the window and I didn't think AC Milan would sell.

Balo's a huge character. Looking forward to it.

I thought Anfield might be a bit boring without Suarez this year...

It is more likely Sturridge will play wide in the games where a diamond is not being used. He is far more experienced in wide positions and he has done it for Liverpool a few times. He has all the attributes and with Balotelli up top, Sturridge, Sterling and Coutinho/Markovic moving around behind him it will be a nightmare for defenders. For me, that would be the most intimidating attack in the league by far.
I think Rodgers prefers a 1 striker formation but I think he will stick to the diamond when both are fit and it is not a really tough game (away to top 4) because you can't leave out Balotelli or Sturridge on a regular basis.
