Why didn't butanoic acid react with CaCO3 , I thought that was the test for carboxylic acids, or did I misread the question ?

I wrote that it only donates a proton when in solution, and that if it's pure then it can't be in solution. No idea whether that's actually right though!

Wasnt actually sure i wrote something like the anion isnt stable if it were to react with CaCO3 but that kinda doesnt make full sense as carboxylic acids are stable weak acids as electrons can delocalise across the C=O and O- i think. I probably lost a mark anyway 😔

Ah here is my working out for the last pH question, finally lets me upload it
I don't think you can use the concentration of butanoic acid given because it is a weak acid. In your calculation you've assumed butanoic acid is a strong acid, and so fully dissociates, but it doesn't. Therefore, to get the H+ concentration, you have to multiply the volume (25/1000) by the concentration of H+ worked out in the previous question, leading to a pH of 12

They never get done for Salters

I'll *try* and get a hold of the paper tomorrow to see if I can whip something up if no one else is gonna do it, but I'm not making any promises. Mans got bio and phys to be revising for.

Dunno, how many marks was it out of? My guess is 1 since it asked for a reagent and it was an aldehyde, not a ketone, but green should be right.
