Hi so I've just started my EPQ on the abolition of slavery and I was wondering how everyone else dealt with the issue of time management do people do parts of it everyday or just try to do big chunks of it all at once? Thanks!

I want my epq to be economics based. I prefer macro but have no ideas what to write about that are interesting and different.

i was thinking about the north-south divide in the uk but not sure if it's broad enough.

    Please help!

Hello, I was wondering if the EPQ is typically done in your AS year or your A2 year?

Hi guys I need some help. So I am doing my EPQ on ' are mixed ability classes putting some pupils at a disadvantage in the primary system'. I've been doing a lot of reaching into the topic: case studies and statistics etc,.... But when it comes to writing this up, where do I out it! In the literature/ research review or my findings/ discussion? I'm struggling with this whole layout thing....

Depends on your school I suppose. I started mine in year 12 (towards the Christmas holidays), did a mini project and then got it whipped into shape over the year 12-13 summer. I think using the summer holidays is a good opportunity, so any timeframe that allows that should be ok.

I'm still considering doing one but I think my school does it in y13, is there any way I could do it earlier? Yes, it sounds like a good idea to do it in the summer! Maybe I should have planned it this summer...

Ooh, ok. Well it's definitely still doable! I think it's only because we faffed around with a test run, I think I could have done mine in a year. Also, we were aiming for the January deadline, so if you aim for summer then you'll be fine! Are you going into year 13?

I'm doing the Edexcel EPQ, and I think my whole project will be over 8000 words (maybe like 9000 max), would I get marked down or something? On the specification it says 'It is estimated that the dissertation produced will be 5000-6000 words in length. Learners will not be penalised for producing work outside the suggested word count, but they should ensure their word count allows them to meet the assessment objectives.'

Don't worry. Mine was about 8,600 and I got an A*. One of the top band exemplars on the Edexcel website is near on 9,000!

EDIT: just make sure you're using those words wisely - waffle will probably get marked down!

I'm going to start AS in September. So the EPQ has to be handed in in September?

Okay cheers! Now I don't need to stress :ahee:. So far all I need to do is the Literature Review and Introduction (which I've done) but I'm not very sure if my Literature Review is great. I want to aim for an A, and I looked at the online exemplars on Edexcel's website and an A* one had a Literature Review which is just so different to mine in terms of structure, so I'm not sure if I've done really well...

Any tips on the Lit review? and also what is the 'Plan'? Because I've not been told about that

Aah, ok, you've got plenty of time then! Even if your school doesn't start it until year 13, you can be thinking about it.

As far as I know, I think there's still two hand in dates to the exam board - one submission in January (where you get results in around March) and one in June (where you'll get the results in August with all your other A-level results). Your school might have internal hand in dates though to check stuff.

God, my lit review was all over the shop, I still don't really know what it's supposed to be! Mine was about a side of A4 and I just basically had a few paragraphs on how reliable my sources were. I think I split it into books, magazines, websites etc. (so compared a specialist book with something more general, the OECD website with Wikipedia etc.)

Thank you for all of your help, I'll talk to the college about doing it earlier as I was going to do five subjects but couldn't find a fifth I liked, so would like the EPQ.

My one is so long its like 3700 words but I've structured it to show both sides of the argument for two areas an then at the end I show how I constructed my question. Would that be okay?

No worries. Sounds a good plan, 4 + EPQ is very strong!

Whew, that is pretty hefty! That sounds pretty solid, I think it is supposed to be 'the story' of your topic, so yours sounds good. Like I say, the lit review still eludes me somewhat, but I think that'll make the grade.

Well done, that's actually amazing! Just a few quick questions if you don't mind, how many sources did you use? Ive got like 40 and I'm worried it's too much.
Also how long did it take you to write? I've done 90% of my research but the thought of writing it is really daunting and putting me off!

    Thank Youuuuuu!
    Thanks.

    No problem - fire away.

Not at all, mine was definitely more than 50. Some of which were irrelevant when I came to evaluate them, but I wrote about that. I printed each source and highlighted it etc, then wrote a comment. So some I said 'this is useless'. I probably had about 20 solid sources though and 50-60 overall. Long story short, 40 is fine.

I wrote mine over the Christmas holidays (instead of revising for January mocks!). It probably took 2 weeks, but I am a perfectionist. For every hour spent writing, I would equal that (or double it) proof reading and checking.

I recommend proof reading and printing off every 500 words or so that you do. Then obviously do at least 5 checks of the whole thing at the end; every time I changed something albeit a comma or whatever.

Once you get into it, you'll be fine.

Do you give evidence in a literature/ research review or just talk about how reliable the sources are? Thanks!

Good Topic. Where can I find the edexcel mark scheme for the epq? Also, could you perhaps send to me your epq? Thanks, would really appreciate if you did
I did AQA. Go on the website. Read the spec to see if it gives any clues. (Don't actually read it, flick through).

I'll help you out and maybe send a little bit but I can't give my EPQ out, that is 100%, to people I don't know. Sorry.
