I think the contraction rate per time is less than 1% and that is if she even had HIV so it is unlikely you will have got it.

She evidently knows better than you, because she is right, and you are not. (we are talking post expsure not pre)

Edit - Just seen your profile and your list of qualifications. I'm guessing you didn't have Post Exposure prophylaxis in the A&E in your time, but surely you've come across it with juniors getting needlestuck?
This is the professional guidance I follow unless you are aware of an update?

    http://www.dh.gov.uk/prod_consum_dh/.../dh_089997.pdf

For most needlestick injuries in health care workers one would not go in all guns blazing with anti HIV prophylaxis, which is what sownrose implied.
The history from the OP implied that the exposure had happened a while ago.

The best advice is for OP to discuss this with an STI specialist, who would obtain a full history and also discuss STI and any investigations/follow up.

No, what I implied is they do it quickly for needlestick injuries, hence why it came after the hour comment, not the first mention of PEP.

    :doctor:

Also, why can't you be tested for 3 months? :eyebrow:
It can lay dormant in your system for a while, or something like that.

Oh and yeah, OP you are an idiot. You had enough money for alcohol and the holiday but not condoms?

Well anyway what's done is done, I hope that you don't have it and that this will be enough to scare you into not being as stupid next time.

sownrose I have noticed that as an undergraduate in optometry you give out a lot of health advice some of which is sensible but most of which is partial, and has the danger of sounding very professional. It is always best to preface advice with 'seek advice from your doctor'.
    best wishes

So the advice "go and see a doctor" in my very first post means..?

And, in my third post, I say "I'm not a doctor", it's not like I'm trying to hide it. My advice was always it's there so OP should see if he's eligible.

yikes thats unlucky! everyone makes drunken mistakes so dont blame yourself its hugely unlikely youll have got HIV so calm down but when the 3 months is up, do go and get tested just to make sure (and make sure you havent picked up anything else!)

That'll teach you to have casual sex. When will people learn? Lose your self-respect, and gain an STD. What's good about that situation?!

Bareback with a random south african girl? lol may as well have stuck a HIV-contaminated needle in your arm.

The only thing you can do now is seek medical attention and learn from this mistake.

What an idiot you are. Why would any male have unprotected sex with a South African girl, when you should know that African women have high rates of sexual diseases?

If not, ignorance and lack of education may well have given you something bad, hopefully not HIV or anything for that matter, but don't be so stupid in future.
