Yes I would. If it was about £50 I'd maybe say I didn't notice. But I'd obviously notice about £1000. It get in a lot of **** if they found out then.
I'd keep the money and quit my job.

Once about a week after I'd finished a temporary job, I got a letter off them saying they had overpaid me by £20 and I need to pay it back as quickly as possible. It just so happened that I knew they owed me a days holiday pay and was planning to go in and discuss it with them, so I went and they worked out that they owed me more than I owed them. Did they pay it back? No.

If it was a small amount probs not, but a large amount like that then yeah.
Yes, but probably only because I would be scared of them finding out, and also because I would then be more trusted.
Yeah, I would. They'd eventually notice, anyway!

My friend got overpaid by £1000 last month at work, but she told her boss so that if they found out, her job would be secure and it would show that she was an honest person when it comes to her getting promoted.

Would you tell? Would your answer be different if the money was more or less than £1000?

I thought I'd been overpaid a couple of weeks ago, and told my manager but it was just a tax rebate :colondollar:. At least I was honest though, I thought I'd been overpaid, I couldn't work out where the money had come from because it said 'BOOTS' rather than 'HMRC' on my bank statement.

Yes. It's a very large sum.

I once got overpaid 800 pounds. But I had already left, and they had treated me like ****, I had been there 2 months and half the people I had trained with had left. That was 3 years ago.

Niceee!

I would, because they'll find out eventually then demand the money back.

Someone I used to work with was overpaid by £8,000 one month, it was supposed to be a doctor's salary but they paid it into her account by mistake....
it happend to me once they paid me a full weeks work and a full weeks holiday (which was the correct payment) i told them hopwever nothing was done so i didnt bother telling them twice.

If it was as big as £1000 then yeah I would, though I have been overpaid by £10-20 quid before and kept happily quiet about it!

I totally would. If I was overpaid by a small amount, maybe I would keep it. But £1000 is a lot of money, and it would look really bad on me if I had kept it, right?

So I would totally return it!

For such a large amount I would, because it's likely it would have been noticed at a later date, and if found out could cost my job and dignity.

However if it was a small amount i.e. less than £50, then I wouldn't mention it, and consider it a bonus

This.

I should keep track of my paychecks.

I would cause I've been under-payed before and expected to get the money so it's only fair if it goes the other way as well.

i have been overpaid by a couple of hundred before and i told.
i never know exactly how much i'm going to get paid cos i do a lot of over time and dont really keep track, but with a big noticeable amount they're always going to find out. it's not worth the risk, imo.
and i'm always the first to complain if i'm underpaid :p: so i figure i should get karma on my side
I'd definitely tell, regardless of how much money it was, because it's not my money and I'd feel really guilty.

It's fraud if you don't.

No, it isn't.

Yup, cause at one point down the road during an audit they'd find out and ask for it back anyway

I'd give it back, but you'd probably be surprised at how much money is written off in various ways in large organisations. In the company I work for we get emails around every couple of days about 5-figure sums which have come into one or other of the firm's bank accounts, where they haven't the faintest idea where it came from.

Depends what job? Part-time at Tescos, nope, I wouldn't even think twice. Not only would I not be massively bothered about walking away from that job but I know that £1,000 will cause no harm to the company. If it was part-time at a family run cafe then yes, I would, as it would affect their business probably quite substantially.

However if it was my full-time graduate job that I intended to stay in and work my way up in, yes I would tell, because £1,000 < career.

No, it isn't.

I had a whole lecture about it at one of my hospital inductions from a fraud specialist there, who told us that yes it is.

Even a news case about it here

I would tell as well after contemplation about it for a day.

Who can resist playing the thought dumb when they found out and say that you haven't been keeping track of money in your bank.
