the pc port was coded horribly. how can anyone say the pc version was a good game. it just wasnt. FFS, crysis and crysis 2 run on max on my system yet it struggles to keep gta iv above 30 fps

I liked both, although I must admit I preferred SA, because of the greater customisation and the general insanity of some missions (stealing the jet-pack, stealing the jet, burning the weed etc) - just great fun! - I think I also felt a greater connection to the charaters too, The Truth, Wuzi, Torino etc, liked 'em all. Hell, I've even started a new campaign on SA, and actually saved the game in seperate slots before certain missions so that I can play said mission over and over because it was so damn fun

It was good, really good. It could have been more fun like SA but otherwise i don't see anything else wrong with it. Definitely not a 10/10. I think V is going to bring the fun back as well as having all the realism fro m IV so it should be a good mix of both games.

It's ok but sa had more, you had to eat and exercise, you could get tattoo's, hair cuts etc etc which I thought they would have kept most of them in iv, it's got an ok story line but there aren't as many extra's such as truck missions, buying safehouses, buying businesses, pimping cars, territory which needed protecting, iv just lacks a lot when compared to vc and sa

The graphics and freedom you got in the game was just mind blowing. Absolutely amazing. Online was good too.

Much deeper character and story development than past games, more complex, attention to detail in all areas was very high, the radio less repetative for example. It really captured a more realistic feel of new york and crime that the past games, in others you basically do completely unrealistic jobs and then own the city, in this you are a nobody, the villans are nobodies, you make real friends and you end up a nobody. Nike, Roman, Michelle, Brucie, Jacob, Patrick and his family, the 5 mob familes, all great characters.
They took out some of the freedom of sillyness and ability to goof around more, but I think if you are creative with the game you can do alsorts.
The next one will be in San Andreas where they say they've linked it to GTA 4, and the maps are going to be the same as the first SA except Las Ventures (Las Vegas) is missing, Los Santos (south LA), where you start off in the first is there, and San Fierro (San Fransisco) is, except they expand the map eastwards this time, instead of west, where Los venturas was. The thing I like about the SA map was the big open country, forrests and dessert between the main Islands/Maps. Maybe they'll reference CJ, Big Smoke etc etc from the first SA. Even though it was set in the early 90's.

I buy the GTA series for the fun, gimmicky, over-the-topness as well as the other stuff so it was lacking in that sense.

Yeah I remember two of my mates at uni, one of them (while the other was still in bed having a lie-in, possibly hungover) loaded the other guy's game, ate loads of food, god really fat, got some stupid tatoos, dumped his hot girlfriend and started going out with the fat one, decked out his aparment with loads of stupid stuff, gave him a stupid ponytail haircut, spend loads of money, then saved the game over all his saves. It was hilarious.

Bumped this thread as I wanted to contribute (sorry) and only recently got the game..
Personally, there are a lot of good additions to the game which haven't been mentioned; things like
- the ability to take taxis, which when you skip the drive, really save on time
- the ability to steal/hotwire cars, rather than having the cars that you just couldn't get in
- the change in character physics and reactions so that there's a lot more individual treasures. There's a lot of talk about SA's environment, but IV is really in the various different people and their reactions for me
- the element of choice in the execution/save sequences were quite cool
- being able to escape the police's radar to lose your wanted level
- repeating a mission straight away without returning to the start point
Planes weren't included for obvious reasons for those that have complained (a hint: it's New York and a sandbox game).
Only about 40% of the way through the missions so can't comment on the complete story arc or things like how you spend your cash, but I've been no less inclined to listen to the story play out.
Things like the camera can be controlled and sorted fairly easily, it just means following the car somewhat with the right thumbstick on a console. The car's handling is annoying at first and takes getting used to but it does make for the ability to actually use skilful driving to avoid the police etc.
Admittedly, the handling on things like bikes is very annoying when you brake hard, but I've never liked bikes much anyway. It is a lot more realistic and you can't be as full throttle, which can be annoying, but it evens out.
My real gripes would be the blocky characters (considering the power of the PS3, it's hardly any improvement on Vice City) during cut scenes, the fact that Niko will always go through the - admittedly cool when you're not in a hurry - car jacking or hot wiring steps. Slowly edging someone out of a car with a gun as five policemen shoot at you is pretty damn annoying.
Overall, a great game. A lot of the pointless tattoos/gym/eating things gone from SA, but they never added anything. Just a shame it wasn't anywhere near as free roaming as SA, less variety in the environment and not much to do in the way of side missions. I ignored the bowling/hanging out stuff entirely thus far.
