Surprised 2001: A Space Odyssey isn't in your poll as I know it's highly regarded. I voted for The Fly as my favourite out of your list. Great film, very eery.

There are such amazing sci-fi movies out there, some of the best are on the poll, but seriously, Star Wars tops them all. It's a titan that will never die, with it's only competition being Lord of the Rings.

Actually, it is. It's a fictional story set in a dystopian, 'near-future' conception of Britain, and is largely grounded in fantasy. I can see how it could be thought of as not being sci-fi, considering its themes and representation aren't typical of conventional sci-fi depictions (or, they're just not as vivid in their representation). It isn't categorized solely as a sci-fi, but it is widely recognized as fitting within this genre (as a number of reputable sources will inform you of).
ah yeah, I guess so. I always forget that it's not set in the 'real world' ...

You should have asked, "What's your favourite sci-fi film", because that's what most people have answered. The "greatest" ought to be the greatest for everybody; a statement of fact- this would require the proposal and acceptance of criteria according to which the films could be ranked.

By a long margin - STAR WARS

Blade Runner got my vote. Although Star Wars is, of course, a classic.

I also think Star Trek: First Contact is pretty awesome.

So hard to choose, there are so many good ones. Terminator 1 and 2, Predator, Twelve Monkeys, The Matrix...

the list is largely missing all the best science fiction films ever made. so i wouldn't worry.

H2G2 isn't one of them though. However good the original stuff was.

Out of that list I'd say Jurassic park - I love me some dinosaurs!
But off that list, I really loved Signs
