Watch anime- you can get a couple of phrases from there, makes it easier.
Oooh good tip- I've always watched dubbed, rather than subbed, so I shall give the latter a go

I have tried on many occasions to self-teach, but alas, to no avail
I could try to help if you want?

I'd love to, currently learning Mandarin though and I feel trying to take on both languages at once would be way too confusing, since some characters overlap.

I picked between Japanese and Mandarin, but decided on Mandarin in the end.

Once my Mandarin is at a good level in a couple of years I would like to take up Japanese

Mandarin is my next language to destroy! :P. Once I'm at my new uni and exam stress is over.

Characters overlapping helps, so long as they've got the same definition in the end?

Ah, never got around to finishing that, although the 'live action' movie weirded me out. That shinigami with the apple...oh gosh

Yeah the live action wasn't great :s It was also odd how they kept the same voice actor for Light. Ryuk was a little scary to behold at first! I screamed the first few times he appeared on the screen

But although the written characters are the same, spoken they are completely different, which would confuse me.
    e.g. 日本
    mandarin: riben
    japanese: nippon
    (both mean japan :P )
