Muslim women are said to be prohibited from marrying outside Islam. Men can marry up to four women outside Islam (providing that the other partner is still a person of the book). That's how I understand it, though it's controversial and some dispute this.

But some Muslim countries do allow Muslims to marry non-Muslims.

Even if it is prohibited, perhaps Cisse is able to justifiably question this ruling? Perhaps he sees it as an impediment to greater integration and understanding between faiths and cultures?

Many Christians don't follow rules or guidelines that they are perhaps supposed to, and can justify why they don't.

Also, has Cisse officially come out and used his religion as a reason why he objects to the sponsor? It may be that he has personal concerns, that aren't strictly (or fully) religious.
No, this is probably like 0.01% of the Muslim population. BOTH Muslim men and women are prohibited from marrying outside their and I don't see how Cisse is any exception to that. AFAIK, by wearing a Wonga sponsored shirt, he isn't doing anything against his religion and as mentioned in this thread already, he has no problem wearing a Virgin Money or Barclays logo.

And yes, he is rejecting the sponsors because of religious reasons: "The striker, who is a devout Muslim, is refusing to promote the money-lending company on religious grounds"

It doesn't matter if it's a very small number. The point is it happens and isn't outlawed (in some countries).

No, according to Islamic law a man can marry up to four non-Muslim females, providing they are people of the book and the children are brought up Muslim. There have been scholars throughout history who have rejected this, but it's largely accepted.

That's how I always understood it, anyway, and although far from particularly knowledgeable I feel I'm reasonably informed.

And as mentioned, high street banks are different (especially Virgin Money, and previously Northern Rock, who had a charity wing).

That's what the media have said. Is that what he has said? From what I can tell he's been rather quiet on this and much of it is speculation on part of the media.

To be fair, there's a difference between having a vice and endorsing one.

Cisse agrees to the wear the branded shirt of Wonga, its been revealed. I wonder how that came about?

Cisse: "I'm not wearing zi shirt with Wonga on it!"

Newcastle management: "OK. Oh btw Papiss, what do you think to this?" (Having shown him the picture with him allegedly in a casino)

Cisse: "Erm, erm - OK, you know what, I'll wear zi shirt!"

Newcastle management:

I admired his stance but sadly, the casino picture, even though not directly linked, undermined him. But would be intrigued by the ins and outs of the resolution.
