    in edexcel chemistry book page 77 there's a graph of melting point against atomic number. the way melting point increases from sodium to magnesium it doesn't increase at same rate for aluminium.
    Because Mg and Al both form giant metallic structures with strong electrostatic forces between the metal ions and the delocalised electrons. Sodium only has one electron per ion in the structure so it's not as strong so doesn't need as much energy to melt.
    Silicon forms giant covalent crystal structures which are really strong so the jump up in melting temperatures is alot more.
