I'm due to start university this coming September. I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice as to how to kindly tell current friends that I no longer wish to maintain contact, due to having study commitments.

Also, in general, how would I stay clear of unnecessary friendships during university which may have a negative effect on my performance?

I ask this because I've heard of many stories where people didn't get the degree classifications they originally aimed for and blamed it on socialising, I don't wish (nor wish to take the chance) of making the same mistakes. Thank you in advance.

tl;dr: How do I go about being a ghost, without being rude, basically?
    STUDY BUDDIES!

Get a load of friends who are just as studious as you (I'm sure you'll find a lot more of those than you did during High School, or so I hope). Then, everytime you hangout, will be at the library or something, where you go be "unsociable" together until meal times! That way you stay hardworking but not totally lonely.

what program and uni are you planning to go to that requires so much studying? I'm sure you can find some time to be social?

Knowledge and Wisdom can take you far in life, but without True friendship beside oneself is the price of success worth it ?

By all means focus on achieving everything you aim for insh"Allah.
It's why you have aimed for further studies but without true companionship beside you, you may only go so far.
The Prophet would have never spread the words of Islam without his friends by his side.

This can't be a serious thread. You'd really lose all of your friends and your own MOTHER just to be able to study harder? Wow. My mum would go mental if I did that, and I care about my friends and family too much.
If you want to become an unlikable robot with zero social skills, go right ahead. I'm all for better studying and achieving a decent degree, but this is not the way to do it.
    We were just playing about
