    Hello

Just wondering if somebody could calm my nerves a tad regarding freshers week. Little bit of a background story first. As of last week i am now 23 years old and i have already had my fun being a teen, making silly decisions and spending an even sillier amount of money on a night out that i ended up often regretting, and it took me a while to realise that going to clubs and similar activities really isn't my sort of thing. I don't find it fun anymore at all, and because i'm a bit older than most undergraduates i really, really do not want to seem like an old man/party pooper the day i arrive because that isn't the case.

I do enjoy a pint or 5, but i prefer being sat in a pub having a conversation and a laugh instead of being squished up in a club like a tin of sardines, waiting an hour for a drink and not being able to speak to your friends all night because the music is too loud and they're all trying their hardest to pull. Really not my cup of tea. I'm a very outgoing person so there is no doubt in my mind that i will be able to make friends who have similar interests to me through the year, however i'm slightly concerned about the first few days with my potential housemates.

So i'm wondering if any current students at the Uni have a similar outlook to me and how their freshers week went and how it panned out throughout the year.
I'm in a similar situation, I'm 26 and living in a flat of 18-19 year olds and I'm not a clubber/major drinking kind of person, more of a socialable drinker now and then. I have lectures most of Freshers week too so wouldn't want to anyway, but I'm worried it's going to impact how I get along with my flatmates same as you are.

I hope both our Freshers end up being great! There is a mature students group on FB for York uni if you haven't joined already, apparently there will be some mature student events throughout the year etc so at least we aren't alone in being older and trying to fit in/get along with younger housemates

Seems as though we are both having the same worries which is a shame! It would be good to mingle in with some older people with a similar outlook as us, it would be awful to feel left out early on.

I hope yours goes great too! And i received an email about a mature students meet up which i admittedly scan read and didn't pay much attention to as i was busy at the time, but if there is a Facebook group for us oldies i'll surely join up (and re-read the email! Lol).

    Which college are you joining?

Did you request to be housed with people more your age? I remember they sent an email out about that to all 21+ students and they initially offered me accommodation in Constantine in a mature students flat but I rang up and they changed it for me due to medical reasons! Now I'm in Goodricke college which was my first choice!

You're in Vanbrugh correct? I remember your post asking about the shower situation in Eric Milner.

Apparently there's a mature students induction in a few weeks and a mature students lunch sometime during Freshers. Here's the link for the mature students chat group, maybe I'll see you on there!

They also sent me the same email but i had already made my mind up about the accommodation i'd like and didn't see the point in changing! Although now i think of it that may have been a better decision. Will have to wait until move in day i guess That's great you got the college you wanted too! Have you seen the Swap page on here? Some people have got very unlucky with their allocated rooms, they really don't seem happy! Thank you for the link! It's great they put on special events for mature students, i like that. I'll check it out now and see what's what

That depends on how rich you are...

It also depends on if by lunch you mean a shop bought lunch or a hot meal.
If it means a shop bought lunch, the only on-campus shop is Nisa, which is expensive by all standards, I've no idea how much the sandwiches there are, but I'd expect to be paying upwards of £3 for a box of sandwiches.
As for hot meals, there are a few campus bars that do lunch (eg The Courtyard) that have a range of hot meals available at lunch (can't remember exactly) at approx £6 for a decent meal.

So generally I would say that you can't afford to eat lunch on campus each day, but I doubt there is a uni anywhere that you can do that.

Although if you are living on campus, you may as well go home for lunch.

I ignored the email too because I didn't want to risk them ignoring my accommodation choices but they seemed to just put me in the mature student flat anyway! Yes I have! I suppose it's not possible to give everyone what they want, no one is going to necessarily want the worse accommodation but someone has to take it!

& thank you! Was Vanbrugh your college of choice also? It's meant to be really good for mature students and you also have the Warren which is a kind of small common room with a kitchen and mini garden area for studying and chilling out

Phew that's great that they didn't get that wrong then! And precisely, i guess we got pretty lucky with our accommodation :P. Although waiting months to find out where i had been placed was torture!

I did pick Vanbrugh as my college primarily because of it's location at the centre of campus, and although i didn't get the room i wanted it has worked out to be the better option financially so that's a bonus!

What was it about Goodricke college that took your fancy?

I'm having the same worry but the joke is that I'm 18 and don't drink at all and I enjoy my sleep too much.. I'm sure that you'll both be fine, just condolences on your sleeping pattern because I'm sure your flatmates will be making noise at the early hours at least once a week.

    Good luck!

That's probably going to happen! I don't mind staying in and socialising at all, in fact i'll relish the opportunity to mingle in! I like those nights, but it's just the whole club scene and ewww Lol. I'm past it!

My plan is to shave my head bald, get several tattoo's on my face and pretend that i have just been released from prison and that going to university is a part of my probation. That way my flatmates will be scared of me and i can tell them to sh, and they will immediately obey.

    Good luck to you too!

No idea, buts mainly cos I've never gone looking for them. I would imagine that the gyms have them, and if not, I'd just go and improvise with a tree/a covered walkway

Oh lord, same here! I was so worried about being put into a college accommodation I didn't want to be in because it really would have effected me badly! Plus some of the accommodation is so expensive! The first accommodation they put me in was 6.6k in rent, I'd have had less than 2k to live on for a year!

Well congrats then on being put in your chosen college! Always good to save money too! Are you in catered? I know Eric Milner A was catered but not sure about B!

It was mostly the accommodation, I looked at it two years ago when I was dreaming about going back to uni and didn't think it'd ever happen so when I did apply this year there was no other option for me really I also looked at all the colleges FB pages to get an idea of the kind of events and such they each held and Goodricke appealed most to me then too. What made you pick Vanbrugh?

Oh no, thank god everything worked out in the end! And wow. That would have been....amusing, to say the least! That's a lot of money for accommodation for the year!

Aww you have wanted to go to York for that long? That's pretty amazing! And now it's finally happened, you must be proud i bet! For me it was just the location of the college, i figured it would save a lot of time in the long run getting around to different places as it's so central!

That... It's a sacrifice but I think that it'll be worth it. Tattoo 'fear God' above your eyebrow to really hit the point home

I know, right? Though it is described as "premium" so I guess it might be worth it!

Yes! Very happy it's actually happening as I never thought it would! My cousin goes to this uni too so I'll have some family around in case I get too homesick!

I don't think you mentioned it yet, what course are you taking? Vanbrugh is quite central and saving time is always a plus!

Ahhh you lucky duck! That's great you are already going to know somebody at the University! Are you moving far away from family and friends?

I'm going to study Sociology! (If you mention the "Sociology is not a real science" joke, save it! I have heard it a million times before Lol. How about yourself?
