Well.. You gotta get a feel for their personality first or the date could be horribly awkward, especially if you have nothing in common
You didn't answer my first question.

Hey! If you're having trouble, I wouldn't necessarily be looking at asking girls out right away anyway. Maybe you should work on making friends with a few girls first!

Asking them out will be a lot easier once you're comfortable talking to them!!

Doesn't this work only if you see the girl regularly?

Listen, I have no problem communicating with people I see in class, other regular situations, but I see quite few people regularly.
Approaching and having a conversation with strangers is the problem. Making friends with strangers isn't easier than asking them out. I mean, making friends usually takes a long time, and how could that happen unless you see each other often?

This is too vague "get to know as many girls as you can"
I've described my daily life in one of the above posts. If I had the opportunities to get to know, or just meet, more girls, I wouldn't have any problem.
meeting girls so that you are acquaintances and turning that into something sexual/romantic are two different steps. The first is done by joining societies, socialising with your coursemates, asking friends to introduce you to people, going out to pubs and mixing with strangers.

If you get a reasonably active social life, you will meet loads of new people all the time, boys, girls, whatever.

    Why with friends?
I thought you were about to say ask what they are doing that Friday, and if nothing, arrange an activity together.
I really think this is much more difficult and definitely not as easy as "just meet them and take them home".
Its very easy once you have practised it a few times. This is how like 90% of university relationships/hookups begin.

I have made a few friends, but some of them have girlfriends, and not all of them go to pub.
Admittedly, I'm not great at initiating small talk.
You would just ask for her number after chatting a bit?
Only if we had something in common. Otherwise why bother? Make your friends go to the pub or get better friends.

I don't go clubbing. Is that the only way?
(Plus, that would be with strangers as well)
Are you at university? you could try some societies? or maybe some girls in class, get to know them a little before but just be confident. Worst happens is they say no and you move on to find someone else. Just don't go nuts over rejection like loads of guys its embarrassing.

Take advantage of social media, if you see her on Facebook or Twitter add her! You can then see if you have anything in common via her recent likes etc.

Send her a message and say 'Hi, I hope you don't find this weird, but I've sent you around campus so I added you? haha' then she will most likely say 'erm ok yeah that's fine lol' and AWAY WE GO.

Don't underestimate how amazing social media can be. Try not to think too much into things, take every conversation as it happens.

P.s I met my boyfriend on plenty of fish so it does work for men, you just have to be real with the person you're speaking too

As I said before, I was being hyperbolic. She's far more likely to believe she's being harassed.
