As for the Diplomatic Service economist hopefuls, while they sit the same Final Selection board as the general DS Fast Stream applicants - they are only compared against other economists when deciding which of them to offer the (normally) 2 economist jobs on offer..
True, but I was wondering whether the odds differ for getting into FCO as an economist or a general fast streamer. With 25 places between 1700 applications for normal fast streamers and 2 for economists, if around 135 of the 812 fast streamers put FCO as first choice, it'd be about the same difficulty. Which seems to match with what I'd been told. I realise for central departments, it's far easier to get in as an economist, but for FCO I was told they reckon both were about the same.
