    The Schengen Agreement means that there are no border controls between these countries. One should still carry their EU ID card however.

    Entirely correct. It is a criminal offence to leave your house without ID

    When I went to Germany via Dover --> Calais last week they checked our passports at Dover on the way, then on the way back they check it *twice* in Calais and again in Dover
