Hey,

I'm in Ty Gwyn Room 110 . Uni hall looks really nice actually, I've read a few reviews from Cardiff students and another fresher I know went there today to check it out and says it's really nice.

The area it's in is tree-lined with huge houses with jags and porches in the drives. There's a huge park nearby (Roath Park) which looks really lovely. The halls themselves are really spacious and set on landscaped grounds.

It's at the top of the hill which is a negative but there's a free university bus that takes you to the top so that's fine.

Josh

ps: There's a facebook group with lots of activity about Cardiff. Search for "Cardiff Freshers" and you'll find it. Lots of discussion topics about uni hall

Looks like were going to be neighbors just found out I'm in Ty Gwyn Room 103

Does anyone know which rooms in Uni Hall get sinks? The accomodation booklet says "most" have them, which makes me nervous.

I'm trying to find a picture on my computer so y'all know who I am but I can't find a normal one.

Does the pope **** in the woods?

Perhaps I'd be best on a bike.

Does anyone play squash/badminton/tennis/football/all of the above and would you like to play me?

I'm in Uni Hall, moving in on the 21st, would be well up for playing you at tennis, football.

What course are you doing?

I'm doing French and German

I'm on Biochemistry. I'll post my phone number/email address closer to the time and try and get some games organised?

I think I read somewhere that the sports facilities are free if you've got a halls card.

Ye suprisingly it does have a squat rack.

How much do you squat bud?
Woop for Uni Halls! I was there last year (Nevern Heaven, baby!) and loved it. OK, so Nevern was the skankiest accomodation in Cardiff (although there are rumours of it having been done up over the summer... I know they definitely did Dwyfor so you never know, might all be nice and new...) but it's probably some of the most social as well. There's 11 people in each flat on 1st and 2nd floor and 10 on the ground, so loads of people to get to know in your block (which happens quickly due to the multiple 3am fire alarms that you WILL have. Although they'll only go off if someone sets them off- don't worry about burning toast at 3am because they won't detect it.). And once you get passed the breeze block walls (bring posters!) then the rooms are actually pretty reasonable and a lot bigger than those in Talybronx. Unless you're one of the lucky ones to get an en-suite (one per flat on 1st and 2nd floors) then you'll have a sink in your room and then there's two toilets and two showers for the whole corridor, which is plenty enough really. Kitchens are pretty small but this meant that we all ended up cooking in groups which makes food a lot cheaper/fun/easier when you're taking it in turns. You also get quite a big living/dining room area which a lot of the halls don't have- great for socialising after lectures/ putting a tv in/ parties (none of us bought tickets for the Saturday fresher's event so we just ended up with a tonne of people in our flat getting wasted and getting to know everyone instead- one of the best nights at uni). Unless it HAS been done up it looks pretty dull at first, but we put up some plain wrapping paper on our pinboard and bought a couple of inflatable chairs/sofas and it was great.

Uni Hall in general- the bar's pretty big and every couple of weeks they do 'sleepy jean' themed parties (basically the same set of cheesy songs every time, but it's a laugh and it's great because you tend to know pretty much everyone there. Uni Hall is really sociable like that. Well, uni in general is, but from what it sounds like it's a lot more personal than Talybronx). They've also got a couple of pool tables down there and they DID have giant connect 4 but that seemed to dissappear towards the end of last year- gutting. But yeah, if you can't be arsed to go out in the evening it's a decent place for a drink. And look out for Bryn, who kicks ass!

As for being two miles out, there's buses every hour. Unfortunately the get to uni at around quarter/ten to the hour which is great for getting TO lectures... going home, on the other hand... well unless it's raining/snowing you're better off walking (30 minute walk/40 minutes to wait for a bus and then it's got to get home, often through a lot of traffic if it's any time after 4!). It's an alright walk really. Well, except for the hill at the end, but you get used to it- good way of walking off those chips/kebabs/alcohol calories...

All in all, I had the time of my life at uni hall- there's always something happening, but it's not so loud that when you need to get some work on you're distracted. Hope you all have similar experiences- especially those of you in good ol' Nev .
