it's a perfectly reasonable method of selection when the competition is as intense as it is for L101 (and the GCSE rule only applies rigidly for this course afaik). they wouldn't use it if there wasn't decent correlation between gcse results and degree performance. of course the system will miss some outstanding candidates, but so does every method of selection through the UCAS system.
I suppose so. But also, those who are more likely to get such grades are likely to come from higher-socio-economic-status families (due to their knowledge of 'the system' [and thus the necessity of such grades] and their probable better schooling). I find this, therefore, socially abhorrent -- as of course there are most probably many times more people capable of doing the work at LSE than those who are in fact accepted, one doesn't need an IQ of 160 to do well there.

(And to think, the LSE started out as a socialist institution!)

looks like it.
but as someone else mentioned, it might just so happen that the people with limited A*'s screwed up somewhere else on their apps.
anway, i ****ed up my GCSE's as well (and my alevels too! ), but still got all my offers at alright unis - i did VERY similar subject choices to yours, (Dbl maths, physics, modern lang german, chem), which i think helped enormously. basically you'll be fine.
Thanks.

I don't really want to do Economics, I want to do Maths at uni. I was just wondering whether this topic was actually true because I have heard so many people say it.

What about Mathematics and Economics? Does the 6/8 A*s requirement also apply to it?

Not really because the applications are handled by the Maths department rather than the Economics one so they take up a different view.

Do you think that I will stand a good shot if I get four As at AS? (My subjects and GCSE grades are in my profile).

Thanks in advance. :yy:

They only look at your GCSEs if you are in competition with another candidate. If you get 3 or 4A*s at A-level you are pretty much guaranteed a place at any university. For example my brother got 5A*s 3As and 1B but still got into Cambridge because he NAILED his A-levels.
