In all fairness, the cats down the road that I pet sit are fed either pouches or biscuits depending on their preferences. The one on biscuits always leaves some behind, and he's fed ad-lib. None of them are fat, so I'm not really sure that cats always do overeat!

I am sure that you could ring around a few local vets and find out if they will do a microchip scan for free. I'm sure that you will be able to find one that does. If it has got a microchip then they will check it against the database and find the owner's name and address. If the owners have moved away or something and you can't locate them then I doubt that there is anything to stop you just keeping it. Also, if the cat has fleas then you can ask them to write you out a prescription for Frontline or something (which by law has to be done free) and you can get the stuff a lot cheaper off the net.
