Hey peeps!I' m new to this site, but I'd like to ask the people who voted they hate Harry Potter, why?
(By the way, I do to!)
What is your reason to hate the pint size- wand waving- nymphamaniac (the last comment is yet to be confirmed but I have my suspicions...!)?
Probably because im not 12 and its a kids film

I like HP for the amusing anecdotes, and it's reasonably well-written. What I dislike is the black-and-white of it all. Take for example, the school houses. Gryffindor, 'there dwell the brave of heart'. So Gryffindor is good, is it? What happens to those who *aren't* brave? Do they not deserve the good house? And Slytherin, not a single evil person who didn't go to Slytherin- so does that mean they're all a bad lot? In HP, you can see the lines firmly drawn, it's a definite black/white situation, Slytherin evil, Gryffindor good, Ravenclaw smart, Hufflepuff, dumb. Draco is evil evil evil, despite him not exhibiting anything more menacing that a tea crumpet is capable, and then there's Harry who has done *nothing*, yet is miraculous. What I would love is if the prophesy with he/Neville turned out to be about *Neville*.

On the other hand, I like the characters Sirius Black/Remus Lupin/Severus Snape. Mainly because I don't see Snape as evil, he's a kid who got scarred by the 'popular crowd', and I can relate. However, the similarity is a sledgehammer wielded by JK.

The quality of writing- it's easier to get through than some, but- check out fanfiction.net. I'm a writer there, and I have to say, the better end of the Hp genre (it's huge!) is just like JK. It's not difficult. A lot of the good ones are older, but there's a sixteen year old or seventeen who can write like her, or better, with better character analysation.

My problem with the 'hate HP' thread is that I am attached to the *developed* characters I see on ff.net, there are some brilliant writers I follow, Gehayi, HonorH, She's a Star, and their concepts have worked their way into my subconcious, as it is, I can't read Hp without connecting SB and RL in slash. *shrug* Once you've read it that many times, the subtext can be seen.

However- the one thing that pointed out the 'crappy' angle was the Snivellus/James/Lily/Sirius/Peter/Remus scene in book five. I have read sooooo many fanfic scenes with that in, except for the nick 'Snivellus' in, since book bloody three. It was painfully predictable, and was *less* well-written than fanfic.

And we can't even get published for our original.. *sigh*. Anyone want to buy a fantasy book on a Listener and a knight?

This is sooo pathetic! People actually spending time saying why they hate Harry Potter. (Obviously you can tell I am a devoted fan..) Don't you guys have anything better to do with your lives? I mean c'mon..you must have a lot of time on your hands to be doing something so worthless..oh wait! It's not worthless to waste time from your life to show your hatred...much more worthy than sharing reasons for why you like something...

You know what, I shouldn't be here..it's just that I get really pissed when people do this. *sighs* I don't think the world is ever going to change...
We have as much right to say we don't like it as you have to say you do. If we want to voice our oppinions on why we don't like it we can. we're not wasting our time by stating the other side of the Harry Potter debate, we're showing that not everyone out there worships it.

yer, but the reasons you give are pathetic. Most haters just say that "It's Crap" they don't give a proper reason.

    I agree.
Love the books but the movies make me cringe. They only ppl watch them is coz of the books (or if their innocent little children who have not learnt the value of criticism yet).
So please, whoever is hating Harry Potter because of the movies, READ THE BOOKS! Don't let lil kids who can't act put you off.

thats another thing. Most haters that come on here go on about how the movies are crap. But nearly all Harry Potter fans agree.

    HP Movies = Crap
    HP Books = fantastic

I just think the books are totally overhyped. They don't do anything particularly good, or new, or anything that appeals to me personally.

HP bugs me. He's so naughty and keeps breaking all the rules just because he thinks he's special. And then he gets away with it all! Talk about equal opportunities and fairness+equality. Just because you've got some scar on your head, doesn't mean you shouldn't get a detention every now and again, or even be expelled - no wonder the other kids hate him. And as for Hermione and Ron...they're clearly clingers on who can't stand not being at the top of the pile and are just after a piece of the action!!

This proves that you don't read the books. Harry has got Detention loads of time. And he has nearly been expelled in every book.

the original books were fine, because they didn't pretend to be more than what they were- easy to read, not fantastically well written but ok stories for kids who arent old enough or developed enough in their reading ability to enjoy some of the more difficult, but more interesting book such as earthsea and lord of the rings.

Once it became very commercialised, with rowling churning out ever more material and resorting to soaplike plotlines to keep the audience interested, then I think many fans, including myself, began to lose our affection for it.

Yes I think that's true. I read the first one when I was eleven (six years ago) and have read every book since then. I remember reading the early books over and over, now I can't. I don't know if it's because i got older or the hype that's put me off. Yet, I know that I will read the new ones at least once...

PS. The only thing I don't get about this "Why do YOU hate Harry Potter?" is are they talking about Harry Potter, the CHARACTER (as in "Harry's spoilt, I like Ron better") or the Harry Potter phenomen in general (as in, "I hate everything to do with Harry Potter, the books, the movies, all the characters" etc)

I think the books were brilliant, readable, fun eenjoyable and adictive once you get into it. I have however become sick of the harry potter saga of late, due to the large popularity of the books, The films are crap, only one tenth of the books true brilliance, with crappy acting by the children, especially ron weasly and draco malfoy. JK ROwling has lost touch with the harry potter ideal, getting absoloutly plastered with money, and becoming snobish and in my opinion concieted and big headed.

I question whether she will ever right anything but harry potter ever again.
I do however sit in anticipation for the release of her hext book, but in my opinion she probably has finished them all already, and is just realeasing them like this to get full market value and profits.

I watched a program on her where she said she planned what was going to happen for the whole books, and then began writing them.
    MY arse.
