Was it mostly first years when you lived there? I was hoping it would be because I kind of wanted to be with others that are completely new to everything like me and I'm in room 12. I hope my room looks like yours because i saw your pics and it looks sooo nice!
how was it socially? i know everyone has a different experience but i was worried about not being in blocks or halls.
And thanks a lot! you've been very helpful!
Its often a mix. In my 2nd year I lived with another 2nd year (my best friend- I reqested to live with her in The Beeches) and the rest were 1st years who had taken a gap year. In my 3rd year I lived with another 3rd year girl, a 2nd year girl (who had stayed on from the year before). The rest were 1st years. It was wonderful socially in the 2nd year- I couldn't have asked for a better time. In 3rd year it was a bit different and I didn't really mix with the boys downstairs much and neither did the other girls. That could have partly been because of us being 3rd years and having more work and pressure etc to do, I'm not sure, or maybe I was just exceptionally lucky with a great group of guys in my 2nd year. I wouldn't worry about it not being in a block at all. After all, in the main JoFo pavillions, people only tend to socialise with their small flat of about 5/6 people from what I've heard.

Room 12 is a decent size- I don't have any pictures at all of that room, sorry. The only annoying thing about it is its a bit of an awkward shape- quite long and narrow but its nice enough. Its next to the bathroom and opposite the kitchen.

Can any present/past students tell me anything about the catered GMS blocks? I was transferred to Somerby yesterday and I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what the situation is with floors/rooms (ie. how many people on average are in them) and how social it is? I'm a lot happier with it than where I originally was but I still have no idea what to expect! Thanks in advance!
Somerby is behind GMS house and is in a square with other blocks, 2 of which, Skeffington and Wistow, I can remember the names of but the other I can't. There are 2 floors in the block, usually it's boys on the ground floor and girls on the top floor. I can't remember exactly how many are on each floor but I think it is between 10-15. There is no definite answer to how sociable it is. It will depend on how sociable you and your other flatmates are.

i think it's cos you're a bloke. don't know about other oadby accomodation but the word on the street about mine is that it's 1 floor guys 2 floors girls per block which suggests there are more spaces for girls.
In our GMS block we've now found about 10 girls all on the top floors and nobody on the ground floor, maybe there's space for you there! Hahaha

Why aren't the accomodation office picking up?

Or am i dialling wrong? It is ringing.

    This is the number, +44 (0)116 252 2428 ...???
Ring the Clearing line and they can put you through, accommodation might not be answering external calls.

    Hi quick question
are people in catered halls bringing any pans/cooking utensils with them? I know i'll be catered for everyday but I'm thinking of those random times when I feel like making something, but then I don't want to bring loads for it never to be used?

I'm catered too- obviously we don't get Lunch. Now, I know that catered flats do have a little baby kitchen, so I'm going to bring the basic basics- probably:

    saucepan
    frying pan
    sieve
    plates (x3)
    bowls (x3)
    Cutlery set
    Tea towel
    wooden spoon
lots and lots of super noodles chicken flavour!

I didn't put Mary Gee Houses as one of my choices and I was accepted there. Is Mary Gee Houses really that bad? How many rooms are there on a floor? How many people share a toilet/kitchen?

I'm in the same boat, and so are alot of others, but everyone seems really nice there! Theres 10 people in the house, with a toilet and a shower room on the bottom floor, kitchen and laundry on the middle floor, and a toilet and a shower on the top floor. 4 people on the top, 2 in the middle, 4 on the bottom.
What block are you in =] ?

Hmm Mary Gee is a lot cheaper than the Grange, every one I've talked to seems awesome. There aren't many pictures of the rooms at MG, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78tJLrQcv0A are the only ones I can find.
Ok, so you'll be sharing a bathroom, if that's a real problem for you, take a look at the grange? If your just a bit 'errrm' about it, I say go for it and If you really hate it when you get there, apply for a room transfer?
    Good luck with choosing!

surely being in halls outweighs having an ensuite away from everyone?
