Ugh, I've been having a pretty rough couple of weeks and not really had time to work on many more apps... when dyou think is the latest you can apply to a law firm and still have a pretty sizeable chance? (I'm talking eg Simmons & Simmons, Clyde & Co, Bird & Bird so not huge ones) - 2 weeks (by mid jan as they have 31/01 deadline) ?

Also I sat the HSF verbal reasoning and logic test. So weird, didn't know what to think afterwards, I got a bit pushed for time on each one though. Some of the logic ones I was really good at spotting and following a pattern, but others were totally alien.

My general rule for applications is apply in the first two thirds of the application window if you can (if it's rolling recruitment). Even then the majority of people still apply in the last week of the deadline, so getting it in a couple of weeks beforehand shouldn't be a problem.

Don't worry about the tests. They are purposely designed so a good proportion of candidates will run out of time/or find it difficult to complete within the time frame.

Thanks JSP, TSR wont let me rep you again but theyre there in spirit!!!

Ugh, the question that always seems to get me is 'describe a relationship that was difficult to form and what you did etc' ... sooo stumped on that, and I should have plenty having been in part time employment for 5 years!! I suppose because all i can think of is where i've had a douchebag manager, and that's not really something I can discuss in an app and look good :P

Has the working relationship with your manager improved or have you had success working with them despite the issue? If so, it isn't a bad example to use.

Need some advice guys - suppose I did a first-year programme with Firm X, and now I'm applying for a summer vacation scheme with them. But on Firm X's application form for the vac scheme, the questions are identical to those that I answered when applying for the first-year programme. Should I use completely different answers?

Depends on the firm, you're best emailing graduate recruitment to ask. Personally i didn't completely change my answers but rather updated them. No point entirely scrapping an answer that they clearly liked.

    Hey,

I've just been told by Clyde & Co that I've been placed on their 'reserve list'. Anyone know the chances of actually getting a placement from there?

I'm thinking a lot of people will get more than one vac scheme and therefore won't attend..

It's really hard to say. It will depend if and how many people withdraw where they have other firms they want to prioritise, and then where about's you sit in the pecking order of the reserve list.

But they wouldn't have a reserve list if they hadn't experienced people withdrawing before so there must be a reasonable chance - just will down to a bit of pot luck as to whether a space becomes available for you.

Thanks! I was thinking this. Seems as Clyde's isn't a magic circle firm perhaps that odds are better than they might be.. Finger crossed!

Do they have multiple schemes and if so are you flexible with which dates you could do?

You have to take it as a positive. If the worse comes to the worst you will be in a strong position to be considered for a TC.

They have 3, but I can only do 2 - I'm running off to Australia for a few weeks! I'm thinking of getting some insurance experience over the summer if I don't get it, as they specialise in insurance law..
