They're two totally different things. A split maintains the party the seats belong to, a merger doesn't.

If they merged into labour then they'd have labours seats, there is not any precedent for the seats rolling over.

Well if they moved into labour, it's against the constitution for an MP to keep his seat as seats are assigned to parties here. Two parties forming a new party would have no seats, one going in to the other would only have the larger parties seats.

The socialists have no intention of merging with Labour so it's somewhat academic.

Not necessarily the larger, rather the seats of the party that survives, and if we run into a name change one could argue neither.

Did the Liberals keep their seats when they changed their name?

I do not know and it depends on when; if they changed during an election there are no seats to lose, if they formed as a splinter they similarly had none to lose.

We'd just form a Labour-Socialist alliance - a merger in all but name until the next election, thus maintaining the seats. Of course this won't happen. But if it did, we'd keep the seats.

Theoretically there's nothing that says parties even have to contest elections as individual entities. You could for example contest the election as a Labour-Socialist alliance with an agreement to split the seats 70/30 no matter the result.

Surprised. Why? Do you feel you no longer fit with the current leadership team?
