You could say the same about the football team, sometimes it feels like I'm watching a Sunday League team!

I know what you mean though, I think a lot of Wrexham people just hop over to Chester if it's to do shopping / go on a night out etc as it's a much nicer place with a lot more going on. Before you think I'm one of these Wrexham freaks who doesn't miss an episode of Top Gear and rocks my head to ACDC music...I don't actually live in (or near) Wrexham, but all these things you're throwing about "your typical Wrexham folk and place" I can absolutely relate to from just supporting the club for 17 or so years.

I didn't see you as a Cash in the Attic type of person.

Dont really watch TV at all tbh, but if I am watching anything at that time of day, then it's got to be Jeremy Kyle. The human zoo.

Sorry to hear this Jammy. Yeah a number of grad schemes I've seen ask for a driving license, Aldi for example. I passed third time, about 30 lessons, quite expensive, and took about a year and a half of doing it on and off. My mate passed in about 3 months though, so it's doable quick if you put your mind to it.

Which is invariably illegal. There are many people who can't drive due to medical reasons, and these people are protected under the Equality Act 2010. Unless driving is an actual requirement for the job (driving itself, not necessarily willingness to travel) then it shouldn't be stated as a requirement.

I do hate employers.

Always felt that in towns like Wrexham, every day feels like a Sunday. Dont mean that in a bad or a good way, but that's the vibe!

Incidentally, when is 'Cash in the Attic' coming to London anyway? Swear they only visit places like Northampton and Blackburn?

I've never even known them go to Blackburn. They rarely venture into the midlands, it seems, let alone the north (and never the real north). I think I saw them go to affluent Cheshire once or twice. It's all the Home Counties.
Eboracum is always looking to make new friends, even in his third year. I have made a fantastic new Japanese friend who has invited me to his society, what a great man.

River! At last!

I wanted to ask you a few weeks ago...I've received a Masters offers from your university (the purple one) and I'm considering it. Tell me about it! Which college would you recommend? What is the night life like? What are the societies like? Would you recommend? Thanks!

I miss FKLW

I miss FK as well. When this poster originally arrived, it was a woman, and then she had a sex change to a man. FK was one of the few anti-Moyes critics along with me, and to an extent Nathan.

Aw :frown:
Ahhh offer from University College London, so happy!  So tempted, the joint 5th in the world thing is tempting. Have to keep up with the grad job options however and see what happens.

Title is over. How the **** do you stop Chelsea. It's becoming like the SPL with Celtic's dominance.

Don't you want to name it? My university? I wish I were the Vice-Chancellor! How I'd shake the place up and would love his six figure salary.

No college, they're all pretentious! Seriously, depends on what you are after in a college. Do you want to be close to your department, what accomodation do you want, postgrad only? (if postgrad only this doesn't leave you with much choice!).

Personally I'd go with Cuth's (which was my college) or Ustinov, neither of which are actually colleges in a techincal sense, though they essentially are. Ustinov because it's postgrad only and I had enough of undergraduates as an undergrad, Cuth's because it is a "friendly" college, to use a cliche, Has a good mixture of local, part-time, independent and state school students, and is widely regarded as having the best college bar (Josephone Butler, which is the newest college, has the largest bar, but not necessarily the best). However, it is a Bailey college, and if you're living in accommodation you'll likely be based in the city centre so a good 20 minutes plus walk from SGIA, should that be your department.

Nightlife is, as you'd expect, awful. Some decent pubs and restaurants, but the clubs are generally rubbish/average and small in number. Shopping isn't fantastic, either.

Societies, in terms of the number of them, is impressive. Some better run than others. Still, better than average, Student Union is historically poor though.

Strong in sport if that interests you.

Is this an offer from SGIA, or another department, for I do have some things to say about SGIA if it is.

Still a better start than van Gaal, after spending less too. I have no idea what's going on in the United thread these days though.

Hello River. Thank you for writing to me. Yes. Your username is purple, and so is your university.

So, I'm trying to get a number of different opinions on these things. And I know you're a respected man when it comes to the university.

In terms of colleges, I have heard to avoid Hatfield, as there are too many "posh boys" and "rahs" there. My cousin was an undergrad and he heard somebody say "Your fathers all work for my father" at the college. I'm staunchly a state school boy opposed to private schools. Although I'd welcome the chance to meet some hot private school girls, which we know Durham is full of....

I heard St John is the Bible bashing college (I'm a staunch Atheist) and I heard St. Cuthberts is for drinkers. I heard Grey College was for normal people. I will be going to Durham in a few weeks to do some groundwork for this. Are these reputations correct? Do you agree with those?

Yes, I'm final year undergrad now, and I'd like to meet some people who don't party 24/7 and are a bit more normal.

Yes. SGIA, do you mean the School of Government and International Affairs? Any comments would be welcome on that, as that is where my offer is.

Basically I have MA International Relations offer from your uni, and I also have MSc International Public Policy offer from University College London. I consider these two as the two best "catch all" universities in the UK besides Oxbridge. Thus I applied to them. There is an argument for Imperial/LSE, but they are more specialist. So I'm not sure what to do. I'll see if I can get some funding. Did you do something in the SGIA? David Held is the chair I'm told. What a big dog! I wrote about him in first year essay! I'm applying to grad schemes as well. Just keeping my options open basically!

Thanks River, I appreciate you taking the time to write to me about your university which you will become chancellor of one day!

I think Moyes was better than Van Gaal to be honest. And he's a nicer bloke. I miss Moyes :frown:
anyone who has seen interstellar, does it match up to the hype or is it just a nolan bumlicking? rarely go to the cinema these days because its just such rip off, even more so when the film is a disappointment.
Was just going to post about Interstellar. Watched it last night and it was one of the only films I have ever watched that I would pay to go and see again. I went into the cinema very skeptical and thinking it would be rubbish. But, it was excellent, absolutely excellent. Nolan (great visuals, and I liked the ending), McCounaughey, Caine and Chastain were on top form. It might not be to everyone's taste, but after having seen a lot of films this year, this one just destroys the field.

I think I will have to watch it again to fully appreciate it. If you are not a very academically scientific person it may confuse you in parts, but after coming home after the film and understanding it I realise just how good the film was.
Can't wait to watch it, going to London next weekend, trying to convince everyone to meet up a bit earlier to watch it.

Also was out on Friday night and Kevin Lyttle come on, that bought me back

They're exaggerated stereotypes.

I never noticed Cuth's as being particularly hard with drinking, just because it has the best bar. Though as a whole it's quite a hard drinking university, which surprises some, and I'd say those at Cuth's are capable of holding their own  Of the Bailey colleges it is perhaps the "booziest".

Grey is known as "grey by name, grey by nature". It's one of the colleges which, at least during my time, seems to slip below the radar. You just don't hear about it as much, either good or bad.

There's always a lot of hatred toward Hatfield. It was the second college, so there's always going to be a rivalry with University College (Castle), and this has filtered down to the later colleges. I remember during one of our lectures Colin Turner (in SGIA) presented us with some statistics after he google the various colleges and "gay". Hatfield brought the greatest number of results by far, something like 10 times the next highest.

The total proportion of 2014 entrants to Hatfield was 59.4% from the independent sector. The average across all colleges was 40.2%. This is non-mature undergraduates only. So, yes, it does have a particularly high intake from private schools. I still found Hatfield's reputation was overstated but, yes, Hatfield and the Bailey colleges as a whole are distinctly "posh".

Van Mildert, Trevs and St Aidans typically have the greatest percentage of state school students, largely because they are less attractive, more modern hill colleges rather than the "pretty and posh" Bailey types.

St John's is known as the Christian college, and does have a higher number of Christians, particularly Evangelical Christians than the others. Has a decent college library though (in terms of number of books) or did at least. Athiests manage just fine there.

Yes. SGIA, do you mean the School of Government and International Affairs? Any comments would be welcome on that, as that is where my offer is.

They're ****ers.

OK, that's a bit harsh and not quite true, and my experience is from an undergraduate perspective (and not a typical undergraduate).

Organisation often left a lot to be desired, as did the quality or teaching (well, not so much the quality, but more the consistency). There were signs of improvement in my final years though as they did receive quite a battering in the National Student Satisfaction Survey in 2009(ish).

I had some quite negative experiences with them from the point of view of a disabled students and support offered. Though I have no reason to suspect UCL is substantially better in this regard.

I studied Philosophy and Politics, so SGIA was one of my departments.

I don't know David Held as he only moved to Durham in my final year. That's kind of the point, academics come and go. Emma Murphy is head of department now and I can't say what the department is like under her. I perhaps saw three heads of department during my time at Durham, and there's been two (including Prof Murphy) since I left.

Ultimately there were signs it was improving as a department but it still seems to be one of Durham's more mediocore departments, from an undergraduate perspective at least.

If you have a strong interest in the Middle East or East Asia I'd recommend it, however, as these are great strengths of the department.

Thanks River, I appreciate you taking the time to write to me about your university which you will become chancellor of one day!

God no. Vice-Chancellor, perhaps, if they don't improve their support for disabled students. I'd shake things up.
