I find patriotism absolutely idiotic. Anyone with a shred of knowledge knows that the British Empire was, and still is responsible for so much violence, division and trauma. I'm fascinated by our history, but to be proud of something that has such sinister consequences is misguided and mindless.

Also, it's worth mentioning that Britain's moment is over: we're hanging desperately onto the coattails of other powerful countries, who still have the resources and space. Our epoch is over. The only reason why our fall from relevance is slower than other empires in the past, is due to the importance of our language for global relations.
    This.

I like being British, but that has got nothing to do with Britain's empire.

I don't necessarily think the empire is something to be 'proud' of to be honest, although it should be held in awe for how powerful it managed to become.
Not sure about that, it was over ambitious and waiting to be taken apart, which the Americans 'altruistically' did along with the second world war...what Germany did suited them down to the ground.

I think Australia, New Zealand, and Canada are better places then Britain at the moment, but they were British originally, and they still have British aspects in culture/lifestyle.

So yes, I am happy to be British, even though I wasn't born in the UK.

It's irrelevant, as all countries are formed by conquest to some degree or another. In fact, the creation of the British Empire was based more on trade, settlement and negotiation than the use of military force.

And forcing Opium into another country?
Everyone loves a bit of opium.

whenever i see something this ridiculous on the internet i always assume it's trolling. however i think trolling is just as stupid, if not more, as responding to trolls themselves. but anyways... umm the british empire is nothing to be proud of. we wen't round the world invading countries, suppressing the local populations and stealing recourses. not to mention the slave trade. being powerful is not admirable, what is admirable is the choosing to do what is right. the British empires values were based on racism and a fundamental belief that the british culture was objectively better, justifying their suppression of cultures and people that they deemed uncivilised. Not allot better than the Nazis.
yeah....i see your point but saying Britain wasn't a lot better than the Nazis is a bit harsh.

Britain may of invaded countries yet in the past there have been many empires like the Roman Empire and they invaded and used foreigners as slaves just like the British. It may sound like a bad thing to do but in the end Britain would'nt be as it is today if the British Empire didn't exist.
We imported and exported lots of goods and many inventions from Britain influenced other cultures. Also, the British culture evolved after the travelling from different cultures and we learnt so much.

And, we're an Island (very vulnerable)....isn't it better that we were the ones invading rather than being the ones invaded. It meant we had the support of other countries and they had our support too.

    Nazis? .......well that's an extreme term as ;
    - we didn't kill anyone and everyone who wasn't of a certain religion/race or sexuality.
-we didn't indoctrinate children which changed their morals forever
    - we didn't torture like the Nazis did........we didn't kill millions and millions of people.......we didn't gas thousands in the "shower chamber"
-we didn't run disgustingly horrible scientifical experiements
-we didn't take millions of people's identities away and instead replaced it with a number.
-we didn't force people into concentration camps where they suffer isolation, punishments and hard labour with the possibility of being killed any second.

............so if you think about it......we were no way near that bad!

and when it comes to being British...yeahh I'm proud to be British *mmmm tea*

What? You can't blame that all onus. Anyway, our foreign exploits in the past have probably been more honest and productive than the Americans ones.
Well we invaded America and ran the Indians out. then there are countless other indigenous minorities that the British Empire treated inferior. It's not all roses and pearls.

I mean even during the Victorian/Edwardian Era the English banned us from using Welsh in school before that Welsh was the primary spoken language in School.

According to Wikepedia, "At its height it [the British Empire] was the largest empire in history and, for over a century, was the foremost global power."

It's so great to be a Briton we are so proud.

The "hippy" as you call him has a point: you can't be proud of the achievements you weren't a part of.
Why because YOU say so ?

First of all pride is not rational or irrational it is a feeling, whether you liberal socialists choose to accept it or not.

I am proud of my ancestors and their achievments, that does not mean I take credit for them. That pride in my fellow Britons and my ancestors drives me to better myself.
Who are you to actually say to someones face "you can't be proud of achievements you werent proud of" Whta gives you the right ot tell people what they should be proud of and what they should not.

I would never criticise you for not being proud of Britains achivements because I have no right to tell you what to be proud of. However, the trouble with you liberal socialist types is that you are a satire of yourself, you contradict your tolerance. You refuse to accept any other opinion but yourself.

I am proud of my country, my ancestors, their history and their achievments and I will be ****ed if some arse is going to tell me I should not be.

Just because your third world homeland is a complete ****hole, and your ancestors chose to live here. You should be thankful that your living in Britain. Look at all your other countrymen queing up begging for asylum and trying to cling to trucks to come here illegally.

You should have a bit of respect.
