    Here's how I do it:
    You are using E=mc^2 there (-aren't you?). 'Masses' quoted in those units are simply referring to the energy created when the mass you are talking about disappears. So you convert to joules and divide by the speed of light squared to get the mass value.

    We never actually went over cyclotrons in class, so I've had to teach myself the entire theory behind it. I guess any questions to do with Rutherford firing alpha particles just requires a stock answer that can cover all points regardless of how the question is structured.

    I just hope it's a nice paper; I resat Papers 1 & 2 and they were way too wordy. I deserve a break...

    anti-proton collides with proton which is at rest. Anti-proton has an energy of 1 GeV, proton mass is 940MeV/c^2, mass of neutral pion is 135 MeV/c^2 and mass of a charged pion is 140MeV/c^2

    How much energy was available for kinetic energy of the pions?

    Anti-proton has the same mass as a proton.
    Convert masses of protons and anti-protons to energy values.
    Sum these energy values with the KE value of the anti-proton (given).

    The energy necessary to form the particles on the right has already been given.

    Subtract to find the energy left, which is the energy available for the KE of the pions.

    It's just conserving energy, but you have to take into account that mass and energy can interchange on a sub-atomic level.
