Hi, my name is Matthew and I am 14.
I am finding Year 9 okay, started getting into trouble a lot, don't know why..
I have already chose my GCSE's but it comprises in 9 GCSE's and 3 BTECs so 12 GCSE in total: English Lang&Liter, Double Science, Maths, RE&PE (compulsory)
Geography, Business Studies, Health&SocCare, Product Design and Media (I am going to chose that in Y10 for Y11.) (I chose)
I am actually quite excited about starting my GCSEs finally something I will like to do!
My hobbies are Politics (quite unusual for my age, but good I guess) and Psychology.

    Hi,

I'm in year 9, I've got until April to hand in my options form.

At moment my 5 choices are:
    Spanish
    Geography
    Sports science
    Drama
    Reserve:Business studies

I'm still a little unsure about drama, but my teacher strongly recommends that I should consider it as an option👍

It would be greatly appreciated if people could give me an overview on the subjects above for GCSE.

All looks good however I would swap sports science with business studies, because looking at your options, if all goes well you could do good with business studies whereas if you take sports science you would get a job in physiotherapy personal training etc. business studies is quite rewarding.

I only do geography out of those subjects, the subject is split into Human geography where you learn about population, migration, tourism etc and Natural, where you learn about coasts, rivers, natural hazards etc. It depends on your exam board really, but I believe bitesize lists all the topics from all exam boards here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/geography/ Edexcel (which is what I'm doing) have a skills paper also which test map and graph skills stuff, not sure if all exam boards have that too

Tbh I wish I did history instead. Geog is not for me and I think many others in my class don't like it either but that may be because we don't get very good grades, not sure if that's the teaching.. Buuut, my opinion is biased ofc, karmacrunch does geog too and it seems she really like the subject

Most schools pick them in year 9, then do GCSEs over years 10 and 11 3 years seems like an awfully long time to do GCSEs :erm:

I take geography and business, so can say a little about that..

Business: (copied from what I said a few pages back)
My best subject, yay. To be honest, it is quite simple, although the exam technique is pretty difficult I find. In year 10 when you do unit one (small businesses) it is pretty basic stuff. Although year 11 is much more difficult, which is nice (focusing on large/growing businesses). Like history though, long questions are key in business. 9 mark questions will become the bane of your life. We do about one a lesson, they are painful to do, and really difficult to get full marks on. I'm probably making it sound like a really crappy subject but I find it pretty enjoyable

(edit: Coursework I found pretty interesting again. In terms of writing, I think I did 4000 words... Or might have been 5000, can't remember. So there's a fair bit to do. Despite this most of our class managed at least 30/40 (myself doing 38/40... Hella yeah) so generally you should be looking at a good grade. Our topic was to evaluate the customer service of a chosen business and suggest improvements.)

As it's a subject I assume you haven't done before, my suggestion would be to go to AQA/OCR (whoever your board is) website and look at past papers, see if they seem relatively appealing to you. Having now completed the spec and started revising, there are definitely parts I enjoyed much more than others but it is pretty wide. For example if you enjoy maths, finance should appeal to you (particularly year 11 finance. Found that pretty difficult+interesting).

Geography I'm not going to lie I am not a big fan of, but that's just personal preference. Also don't have a great teacher which probably influences it a bit too. Basically on AQA you do three human and three physical topics. I would say human is generally quite easy to grasp, but with quite hard exam technique (and I think business helps a lot here actually). For example we do tourism, sustainable urban environments... And another I forgot (whoops.).

Physical is much more difficult I think, and is pretty much pure knowledge. Again we do rivers, coasts and "restless Earth" (ie volcanoes, earthquakes and mountain formations). This is a little more interesting, but you need to know a lot about key words and how things a formed. I'm sure every paper I've done involves a "how is a xx formed".

Finally the coursework (25% I believe). This for us consisted of a field trip to Dorset (which was one of the most tedious days of my school life.. But that's due to our school, not the subject) and we had to collect information regarding tourism. Just finished it actually. It was quite fun to write up, particularly as I enjoy essays. Although there is a fair amount of writing. I did 5,000 words I believe that's in the lower end of my class too (for those aiming A/A* anyway).

Can't really think of much more to say... Any questions, shoot

We picked them in year 8 to start in 9
Couldn't be happier my school did it tbh.
As someone who hates with a passion the likes of art, music, etc spending a year less doing them and a year longer on the subjects I enjoyed I thought was pretty beneficial

But what we did is concentrate on other topics. So for example in geography we learnt about the GCSE topics that we wouldn't take, if that makes sense? In history we did terrorism but again something we wouldn't take in the paper.

I only found out last week, just before she had the deadline for it to be handed in. I wonder how long she's been pondering over it

Also found out that she does this project with a uni, she has a thesis to write  and I realised she was doing the arts award last week too :eek4: I remember doing that :moon:

It does make sense to give you a bigger interest in the subjects, but personally I prefer to just focus on exam content  Each to their own though

Yeah I wish we had focused on exam content to be honest, but I'd still rather be doing unrelated history than art :P
(Or I'm sure the artists would rather be doing unrelated art than history)
