A good player, but the media fanfare has been ridiculously over the top. MOTD have never shut up about him for months. I don't recall remotely the same level of fanfare for people like Giggs, Scholes, Lampard, or even Fergie. Stood out most when playing in a mediocre team (as the numerous references on this thread to McClaren's England demonstrate).

The fanfair was always going to be over-the-top. Carragher didn't even get it, and for all intents and purposes, he played more games for Liverpool and was an actual one-club man. I think it's testament to Gerrard's character and personality just how uncomfortable he seemed pre-game by it all. He apologised to the rest of the Liverpool squad for hogging the limelight, and such. I think, when the day came, he just wanted a good send-off for his family and to share the moment with his kids.

Frank Lampard age 34 = Captained Chelsea to CL success
Ryan Giggs age 34 = Scored the goal to seal the PL title for United & scored a penalty to help United win the CL
Paul Scholes age 34 = Scored the winning goal against the best club side ever to seal United's place in a CL final and won the PL
Steven Gerrard age 34 = Running off to the MLS like a mercenary after an embarrassing season.

Wouldn't put Gerrard in the top 5 Premier League mids never mind the top 1.
The key is all around, center mid. Gerrard did it all better than the rest, with the probable exception of Roy Keane.

Paul Scholes was a better passer of the ball, but could not hold a candle to Gerrard defensively. Lampard scored more goals and played further up the pitch usually, but again, defensively, was not as good as Gerrard. Ryan Giggs did not become a CM until very late in his career.

And at his best, Gerrard could pass, shoot and defend like the best.

The thing is, all of those teams had much better supporting casts, at their age 34 season. When Liverpool finally gave Gerrard a decent replacement for Torres, the entire defense was rubbish. Scholes retired, unretired and retired again. Lampard has himself moved to the MLS and then continued to play for Man City where he should be playing for NYFC right now. Giggs...well....

Yeah because Gerrard achieved so much with England. Lead them to glory on numerous occasions. Seriously man, get off his ****.
Career was bigger than Scholes. LOL, mate you're just embarrassing yourself.
Ignore him, Without a doubt the worst poster on the FF. Blatantly Anti-United disguising himself as a United fan

This is the thing for me. He encapsulates all the greats, which is why a lot of people tout him as the best.

He could tackle as hard as Vieira and Keane, he could stroke the ball around like Scholes or Alonso, and he could score at crucial times like Lampard.

His only "real" achievement was diving to win a penalty in a Champions League final.

Lasting memory of Gerrard's career will be the eyeroll he gave Benitez when he subbed Torres off at St. Andrews against the Blues.

Bar for the 4 month period in late 13/14 season as the DM he's been quite average and there have been calls for Gerrard to be dropped for some time.
A football player getting worse as they get older, shocker.

Still the BBC won't let up with the Slippy G farewell tour. Utterly repulsive and disrespectful article towards Lampard.

Lol what? It praises him all the way through then concludes that Gerrard wins by the narrowest of margins.

Are you high? Couldn't be more respectful to the pair of them. A very, very rare and detailed insight without the usual narrative peddlers suggesting either a) Gerrard is **** and Lampard rules, b) Lampard is **** and Gerrard rules, or c) both are **** and an example of England becoming enthralled by sub-standard footballers because we've got nobody else.
