I would have thought that the biggest difference between then and now, where this home economics textbook is concerned, is not that people no longer follow these guidelines, but that they would not be in a home economics textbook.

To be fair that sounds like a great, happy, family life. We have gone from that (when one person could earn enough to raise a family) to now, when the average family trying to get by on one salary would be suicide.
And if being the person in that article sounds horrible for women today, I would happily do that all day. Sounds great. I wish I was a 1950's housewife.
and I would have happily married you, if you were a girl. The problem is people think that a women is oppressed if she confines herself to household duties. I come from a place where our mothers and sisters take care of the household and we men earn and support them, and trust me neither they are oppressed nor do we men are like what people believe these roles makes us (of course there are black sheeps everywhere and no doubt men punish and oppress women, but it the person to be blamed not the role) we respect our mothers, wives, sisters a lot and believe in protecting and caring for them. I do not see how a women limiting her self to household duties is bad thing, if she is comfortable with it then I dont see any problem.

This has very little to do with "oh men work so women should do the housework"

It's all to do with the the way we view the sexes, the philosophies of the time such as 'Angel in the house' and 'separate spheres'. Such a text is written to portray a woman as weak, as having nothing better to do with her mind, only being useful as a servant. It attempts to portray the idea that a woman's only mission in life is to please her husband. This is of course psychologically harmful as they're viewed as less of a human, the man is counted as a person and the woman is just there to help him in his endeavours by making his life easier. It's even more harmful when you consider the woman to be the one to deal with the husbands problems, they would get taken out on the woman because she's supposed to be more than just kind and caring, she's supposed to be a pushover.
This allowed them also to justify domestic abuse.

People who agree with the way women were treated in those days don't understand the deeper issues

It's one thing choosing that role for yourself and another having it dictated to you.

Personally I think I'd probably kill myself due to a lack of mental stimulation/socialising.

I would personally have it more balanced-so both partners could work half the week each. That way you get the best of both worlds. At the moment feminism in terms of this example has given women a choice, they have the right to choose what to do, they are independent, they have freedom. However, the economic reality is that they have to now spend more time at work than their family. Hardly real progress. Of course this is not the fault of feminism but capitalism, globalisation, consumerism, whatever you want to blame-equal rights did not cause this pitiful state of affairs from a work perspective.

Easy: "don't be one, the concept of marriage, even between two females, is an inherently sexist one, bring down the institution of marriage and enslave your man"

    Easy.

How to be a good wife

Communicate regularly with your partner on how best to fulfil the needs and wants of both those in the relationship. If you have children they should also be considered

I agree with the page from the economics textbook. Everything written there, if followed, makes a brilliant wife.

OP how old are you? You come across as extremely naive. And this thread is extremely offensive to the millions of housewives today who believe that men and women are identical and have different roles. Not every woman who choowes to live her life like this is oppressed.

Isnt femenism all about giving women the right to choose not shaming them into burning their bras and abandoning their reproductive/evolutionary duties????

Can't imagine blowjobs in the 50s; either too much hair or probably illegal.

Lol naive? You don't make sense :/

Well I never actually said a woman 'shouldn't' live like this, I just said there has been a huge change since the 50's. Living like this wasn't a choice for women in the 50's (+before), it was expected. Of course if a woman wants to do this today then so be it, it's her life.

    But good on Feminism!

Now if only the whole world could make these choices that we can...

More correctly a good wife for you
Not neccesarily for anyone else, nor does it seem to care about the wife's well being.
