its that law of the jungle backward mentality group think prevalent in Asian families which encourages them to break into the profession. the traditional parents will refuse to see reason, they see that as the pinnacle of prestige. you can earn £3000000 bonus in investment banking or law as a partner but they will still look upon the doctor son as the favourite. you cant educate these people from their backwards ways, they are stuck in that mentality.

Some people only know medicine, law and engineering because you don't hear about other professions in school apart from teaching. Since a lot of people dislike essay writing their only choice narrow down to medicine I guess.

Yes, but it's still only helping a few people at a time.

Your average joe hates most top businessmen. They start up their companies wanting to help others but use tax havens and rip off the working class.

I would love to be someone who had it in me to become a doctor. I just don't. I'm not empathetic, I hate blood, I hate telling people bad news, etc. No amount of House MD will ever change that.

I guess if you know you are the kind of person who could become a doctor, then to pursue medicine is a great feeling.

Depends on the company and founder.

I was more meaning products reach more people, jobs are created and philanthropy can be achieved.

Most businesspeople don't use tax havens, they might use tax reduction strategies like paying out dividends from shares, donating to charity etc but the vast majority pay taxes.

When I told my parents that I don't want to pursue medicine, I was told that I have no ambition and they didn't talk to me for weeks

Little do they know that a science degree opens up opportunities that pay much more than a doctor/GP :indiff:
I have Asian parents and when I announced I wanted to do medicine, they were completely against it

They wanted me to do anything but medicine and cuz my dad is a doctor, he just kept telling me all the cons of being a doctor

They'd always wanted me to do dentistry

Yeah but that's mainly because loads of Asians go into engineering and accounting degrees but then realise that banking pays better and is more for them and apply for that.

To be honest, even if I do medicine, research science is something that I want to complement it with. Things like genetic and drug research is the future of finding revolutionary ideas and even cures. I think the opportunites that medicine offers someone is immense. Even if you're a doctor, you can specialise in different things. People say about how law can get you millions. However, consider what proportion actually ends up getting that salary. Most will be in the same bracket from 50-150K. Yes finding cures may be rare as well, but the number of things you can do within research alone creates a chance to do something new.

Just finished a few days of heart surgery and let me tell you, you will question your decision for anything when you start OR at 8am and end at 8:30pm and find out the resident was rounding since 6am and was on call that night...
