Examples count for a lot, i applied for an early years teaching course when the places were all gone the uni i'd applied to looked at my personal statement and offered me a place on a music teaching course. What else do you think personal statements are for? So you cna tell uni's how grewat you are at extra curricular activities and what extra curricular qualifications you have and they are important.
Maybe they do count for a lot, I don't know. But my argument, for the reasons I outlined, is that they shouldn't count for a lot.

Also, your course is not a particularly academic one (not that I am of course saying that that is in any way a bad thing) and so activities may be more important than academics for your course. The OP wants to do a very academic subject at a top university, maybe Oxbridge, and so academics will be the main thing he is judged on.
