Are you ****ting me? I had to go 2 hours from where I was to go to college and you complain of an hour?!
Why was that? That's an incredibly lengthy commute either way for a school!

Just going back to the discussion about languages / a-levels etc, as an MFL teacher, I'd obviously love everyone to have to take a language at GCSE as it would give me great job security etc.
Going back a few years, as SoS for Education on here it was something I proposed. However, I'm not 100% sure now. I think maths and English should be compulsory, the rest should be optional. There's no point forcing people to study something if they hate it / are no good at it. Plus we simply don't have the teachers. By making things compulsory, you risk bringing down some of the cleverer, more able students etc. Same with science. What needs to be done is to promote the 'good' subjects. You need to make it clear that if people want to go down the academic route (not everyone does and there needs to be more vocational opportunities) then languages, sciences and history are key. The Ebacc has been EXCELLENT for this. Despite some idiots moaning about it. Numbers taking languages have increased at GCSE level and this is good - it's people wanting to study these harder subjects and that's the key - change the mindset not shoehorn people into studying subjects they dislike.
Furthermore, about 4 A-levels is perfect. The key about the A-levels is that it allows great specialisation. By that time you should have decided roughly what route you want to take (science or humanities) so it's better to specialise. I did Eng lang, French, German and biology (just because I wanted a science option, too). One thing I wasn't keen on when teaching in Austria is that they take more subjects like most countries in Europe (and around the world) but simply don't cover things in enough depth. If that's the subject you want to study at uni, I'd prefer people to have greater subject knowledge in one or two areas rather than a bit of ability in about 8. To improve the basic maths and English skills of children (which HAS to happen because it's an absolute disgrace at the moment - 14 year old austrians can write better english than 18 year old English people) the thing to do isn't to get them to keep studying year on year, it's to make the course more intensive earlier - students need pushing in maths and english when younger - strip away all the silly extras, take it back to basics in the early years, and allow for more interesting exploration of the subjects at GCSE.

New riding boots arrived today, a bit too long so to sit down normally in them, or even to mount up, I need to undo them slightly

And my mother told me earlier that the rail strike this Thursday has been called off. Now, I wonder what the changes are that the 48 hour strike is also called off and the unions accept something very similar to the original proposal?

I actually enjoyed the Unit 1 exam. I wouldn't say it was easy, but it wasn't overly challenging. I'm probably on the A/B borderline. Yourself?

Aye, so am I. I'd take a B, but I think I could and should get an A
