Wai, dai lou (hey boss), I'm going to HK this summer. What can I call shopkeepers there? Dai lou? If you've seen Kung Fu Hustle, when they're going to get a hair cut, it's what Stephen Chow says to the hairdressers...

Basically, how do you say, in Cantonese...
    Old friend
    Boss
    Big brother
    Xiong di
    ?

    Lo pung yo
    Lou sai
    Dai ge
    Xiong di

Dai Lou is basically big brother.

If you're talking to the shopkeeper, say "Ding ley gor fai" as appreciation. It means much appreciated essentially.

Maybe I'll just speak Mandarin there, apparently they will think you're rich if you speak Mandarin though

I'm sure you've seen what both of us look like. Obviously I'm better looking so we are not the same person. Also I wouldn't mind Skype camming with you to prove it

    You're joking right?

Mainlanders are seen as the poor, uncivilised people there.

I exaggerate of course, but it's true that many in Hong Kong respect those who try to learn Cantonese than those who clearly come from the mainland.

You're better off speaking English IMHO. That way they know you have money to spend and will deliberately rip you off.

Really? My friends from HK told me that if you can speak Mandarin you're rich... Anyhow the people there will be impressed when I call them dai lou. I'll lie a bit and say I'm Australian then.
