Especially because the quality of the World Cup is very low. Second rate tournament. Means everything to players and fans but means nothing football wise.

This tournament was of decent quality compared to others but it's def worse quality than the top club teams around the world. Obviously 50 years ago it bought all the best players into one tournament but nowadays it doesn't even do that.

He could have just chose to play for Spain and won the World Cup. Does it make him an any better player? Not really
Apparently to the moronic pundits like Mark Lawrenson and casual fans, it would've been.

Shame he didn't chose to play for Spain. Could've had the Barca set up for Spain and they probably would've dominated even more!

How so? He's got very little body fat, very good acceleration and very good body strength. Where exactly is this improvement coming from?

Rooney's physical downfall is because he's a slob.
He has a lot more body fat than a lot of top players. What improvement are you talking about?

Yes, Rooney is a slob and I'm suggesting that Messi, while not a slob, might not do as much to keep himself in shape as others do. When you are in your early 20s you don't have to care about stuff like that when you have as much natural talent as Messi does, but it isn't looking as easy for him these days.

Tbh that's very unfair. Messi hasn't lit up the tournament but he had a decisive influence in Argentina reaching the final.

I find it ridiculous that you apparently have to win a World Cup to be the GOAT. Does that mean if you don't come from one of the powerhouse nations, you can't ever be the GOAT? For example, a player like Bale just because he's Welsh?
Sorry, I'm a little distracted. I meant to say 'World Cup Final', not 'World Cup'.

Agree wholeheartedly with the second part. To end the debate, here are two hypotheticals:

Player A (let's call him Messi/Ronaldo/whatever you will) scores a hat-trick in the final. His team loses 4-3 with a couple of own goals, one keeper howler, and one refereeing decision that was just wrong. Never wins World Cup.

Player A does little in final. Game goes to penalties. Perhaps scores his penalty, does nothing more. Team wins World Cup.

Assume all other details of player's career are the same, consistently excellent, lots of other trophies, etc.

It is ludicrous that in scenario A, player A's quality as a footballer is somehow less valid than in player B's scenario. Sure, they are extreme examples - but they do indicate how silly the 'winning the World Cup' obsession can be.
