To be honest, I think the biggest barrier at the moment for homosexual couples is the oppressive force of religion. Because so many religions preach their distaste for any sort of homosexual behaviour, and so many people are religious, it slows down a lot of progress for equal rights. Look at homosexual marriages, for example. Instead of marriage simply being a sign of partnership in the eyes of society and the law, it is seen as some sort of religious ritual.
