Neither, when someone holds a gun to your head, you dont have two options( do what he/she says, or die)
There are hundreds of other options
You take the gun, pull out a bigger gun, open your jacket and reveal you got a suicide bomb attached to your chest.

In short you always have more options if you like to think outside the box
You've missed the point of the thread, we know there would actually be other options, this is a hypothetical scenario with only 2 options available.

By family do you mean everyone who is related to you or just your immediate family?
Immediate (i.e. your most loved ones).

Also, anyone saying killing the family is the "right" or "logical" thing to do is mad.

Firstly, there's no such thing as objective morality.

Secondly, killing your family is stupid, they share your genes and so are of much higher value to you than New Yorkers are. In fact nuking New York results in them no longer taking up resources and therefore providing you with a further advantage.

It's a no brainer, save your family, Nuke New York.

Any rebellion will be quashed. Resistance is futile.
On a side note, you should do a series of these questions.

An interesting perspective, if not shocking to some. Nevertheless, the reasoning is rational. :top:

No. Clearly that would make it too easy and it wouldn't be a difficult decision to make at all. You can't change the rules, as I explicitly stated.

My "family" as in my own parents and extended family - I'd save the city.

My own family - as in my partner and children - ... I'd wipe out the entire population of the planet and we'd spend our days driving sports cars around the broken ruins of civilization like The Omega Man before I'd let them be killed. Sorry everyone .
