Jay-Z just markets himself well, look at the promotion for his new album for example, he tells people he's the greatest so much everyone just believes him. His music is catchy and un-threatening, middle class white people love it, as do casual Hip-Hop fans, he appeals to people who's only analysis of the music is whether it's a 'tuuuuune' or not. I'd say he's just slightly better than average. -

However in all fairness, he's a great lyricist. -

Not sure why people keep saying lil wayne has no talent, people on the planet are the judges of talent and it's clear he has talent.

I disagree, listen to this battle from 10:00 to 10:20. That's intelligent wordplay right there.
EDIT: Actually, it's pretty crazy up to like 10:48. **** it, listen to the whole battle. I always forget how ****ing great that battle is.
Nine times out of 10, it’s 11- or a 12-gauge
Friday the 13th, that’s the day that Hell raise
But y’all boys too weak, like fourteen days
You can't tell me that isn't clever -

I am a big fan of rap music. Ben in to Hip Hop since as long as I can remember. Unlike some of you though, I was around when PE first came about and a little known chap called Dr Dre was in NWA. I have seen many genres of rap but few of the current crop are up there in terms of meaningful quality hip hop like their fore founders. Most chase the cash and cheat listeners with cheesy lines. Imagine KRS-One coming up with some of the crap 2Chainz spouts. Wouldn't happen. Got a lot of time for Kendrick and J Cole though. After slating commercialism, I do have Dizzee as a guilty pleasure too.

Been getting into Action Bronson recently, even if some of his lyrics are pretty distasteful. Rare Chandeliers is fantastic – The Alchemist is a great producer. Also I saw The Pharcyde at Glastonbury and they were amazing; did a few ATCQ covers as well. Will definitely have to check them out some more.
And I'd say my favourites of all time are probably DOOM, Wu Tang, ATCQ, and Mos Def for Black On Both Sides and The Ecstatic.Last edited by Plainview; 09-07-2013 at 13:37. -

Love some of those choices. Pharcyde are so under rated, brilliant act. Wu are obviously hot. Don't know much about Rare Chandeliers will def check them out -

I also think here is a good place to publish my view that Biggie was and is massively overrated. Or should I take that to the 'controversial opinions' thread?

big L is good but not no goat
L is up there in terms of skill, I'd put him somewhere in the top 10 MC's.
His dark humour, grasp of the English language and utilising street slang was pretty much second to none.
He doesn't branch out much from boasting and horrorcore that much so he's not really that versatile but he found his comfort zone and he mastered it. He was very clever and funny, The punchlines were insane.
L was great because he was a straight up, legitimate rapper. His lyrics were nice, his flow was nice, he spat nice. In my opinion he's one of the best and his debut album was brilliant and consistent all the way through. -
