Though Sir Winston was the reason why Dr Turing had his job.
Turing did a lot more than break Enigma. Winston did nothing more than be stubborn.

Dr Turing probably also wasn't racist or misogynist.

According to one of the most famous historians of the twentieth century in this work...

    http://www.amazon.com/English-Histor.../dp/0198217153

What qualifies you to disagree? A History A Level or something?.
You need to actually read the book. He sees him as a hero regarding the war, but never calls him a savior, and emphasizes the various things he did wrong outside of his wartime career, which was the exact point being made.

Though far be it for me, a History A level student, to disagree.

Churchill also wasn't as mistreated as Turing
Cambridge should rename Churchill College. He didn't even go there.

Clement Atlee. Hows he not on the poll?
    You spelled his name wrong.

Also the love for Churchill in this thread is a little over the top, not good for anything but being a figurehead and bad for many things
He was good for an enormous amount more than simply being a 'figurehead', and people who say things like that mark immediately themselves out as being completely historically illiterate. Every leader is bad for many things in a world war, but if you read a few books on the subject before spouting off you will eventually realise what every respectable historian has realised which is that that no-one could have done what Churchill did anywhere near as successfully if at all, and that his sheer genius of leadership, oratory and innovation and the depth and scale of his character and industry easily puts him in the running for greatest ever Briton. Clement Attlee doesn't even come close. Why would he?

It is clear that your political tribalism is leading you to make these cretinous remarks in a sort of overeager filial loyalty, but there is no point in expressing an opinion because you want it to be true rather than because you really believe it, having put the effort in to really educate yourself about the subject.

Nor did St John or Jesus Christ.

Are you comparing Sir Winston to The Son of Man, The Son of God Messiah Jesus ****in' Christ, The Prince of Peace, Our Lord and Saviour who died for our sins?

This is without mentioning the fact that Jesus does go to Cambridge. He's omnipresent.

The thing he was best at was the world war. The man was no great military tactician as shown by Gallipoli, the home front was well operated but almost exclusively by different members of the cabinet but he was an extremely good figurehead and speaker. Outside of the war, he was admittedly vigilant to the threat of the USSR, his support for detente was ahead of his time however as a Peace Time PM he was one of the worst particularly as he did nothing, not forgetting that he catastrophically put us on the Gold Standard.

This is not political tribalism, Churchill overall did a better job as PM than Tony Blair or James Callaghan but one of the Great Britons? No he's really not.

Attlee however brought the UK succesfully out of a wartime state, established the welfare state and moved the economy forward strongly coping with the adversity of the Winter of 1947, of course he did over-nationalise but ultimately Attlee simply did a better job than Churchill. He is therefore in my opinion the greatest Briton.

Why was Sam Smith on the list?!

Of all the other potential people - you had him on it, his music is dull and he's contributed nothing to society except for a fairly sh*tty Bond song.
