I guess it's just empty courtesy

I always ask people that in the library in case I plop myself next to them and they go "um .. sorry, I was saving this space for someone."

    :indiff:
Agreed although if you think about it, the phrasing is a bit weird. It should really be "Is someone going to sit here?", right?

That's true, but we all know how us British people are so indirect - almost uncertain ourselves - about our own intentions

Yeah, you're right. I think, if people worded it a bit differently it wouldn't sound as silly, but for me it's a case of me being pedantic

I know right, and you're just sitting there like "let me jab your hand with a pencil and I'll give you the chance to answer your own question "
Haha I know right! And they say "please don't cry" and I'm like "if I bloody could I bloody would" haha stupid people haha

Lol this is so true, but I think what they're more trying to get at is "What's wrong?". I guess the two phrases are just used interchangeably because they assume you'll tell them what's wrong if they ask either.
Haha I know but it just makes it worse and then even though they're meant to be comforting you end up either shouting at them or crying even more haha.

Hey I am not stupid. I have said this before to someone.

people say "please don't cry" so that the other person may find it comforting knowing that there is someone who cannot see them crying.

I've definitely felt that way before.. Except it happens more when I'm angry so it makes me even more angry and then I find it nigh impossible not to keep from lashing out. Luckily I'm not too outgoing so the lashing out bit seldom happens

Well you indirectly implied that I was.

anyway if you are crying and someone says "shhh" then he will follow it up with something like "why are you crying" or "talk to me".
