Guys don't say 'R.I.P' in that manner:

R.I.P. effectively is a dua for the deceased. Muslims have been prohibited from making dua for those who have passed away on kufr. Therefore, it will not be permissible to say r.i.p. for non-Muslims. R.I.P. is commonly used amongst non-Muslims therefore; it is advisable that one does not use it. It will be better rather to use dua’s such as رحمه الله تعالى(May Allah Ta’ala have mercy on him) and similar type of dua’s for muslims.

No, it was that I did not know that you could not say r.i.p to only non-muslims.
I thought saying r.i.p was forbidden even upon a muslim's death

If anyone has a spare hour, watch some of the touching, emotional, funny speeches given by various people at Ali's memorial service. Billy Crystal's hit a lovely balance between humour (the Cosell story lol) and seriousness but the Rabbi Michael Lerner's speech was powerful - a speech even Ali would have been captivated by.
