Black woman doctor on flight dismissed as passenger chokes

I think it is so sad that the amount of racist people out there, from stories I hear and seeing it myself. We all live on this planet and we all all the same apart from the skin colour. Racism is something I don't agree with, I accept people for who they are and by there personality not by their colour!

This is a really sad story, and it underlines just how pervasive racism can be. On an American domestic flight a man started choking and the flight crew asked the passengers whether there was a doctor on the plane.

There was a doctor; she happened to be a black woman. The flight attendant dismissed her offer to help and said "No, we are looking for an 'actual' physician or medical staff". Can you imagine how that would feel? You are a black woman who has worked your butt off to get good grades in high school and then at college so you can get into medical school, you've done well enough to continue on to become an OBGYN specialist and yet on this flight you are dismissed out of hand merely because you are a black woman. I can't imagine how frustrating and hurtful that would be.

For the sort of people who are constantly claiming that there is no real racism and deny the economic disparities between white and black people, this story is a reminder that no matter how hard a black person works and how accomplished they are, these racists can't accept them even when they are discriminating against someone who is smarter and more accomplished than they are.

OK, two weeks too late on my part, but this isn't the whole story.

Yes, the flight attendant initially dismissed her. Maybe it was a mistake, maybe it was racism, maybe she initially didn't clearly state that she was a doctor, maybe she was embellishing a little in her Facebook post (which is often how these things go). However, the flight attendant returned to Cross and asked her for her credentials and some more info. She couldn't provide any ID, so the flight attendant had to refuse her (airlines need assurances that you are a doctor nowadays, and someone else was also refused according to the airline). Another passenger came forward and could provide ID however, and was allowed to assist the patient. Cross then cited this as a case of racism.

I suggest you amend your OP to bring attention to this, as it is misleading.
