Our supervisors are having none of these "try every question until you get stuck" nonsense :p: We are just given select (hard) questions and got told all the other ones are a waste of time. For DE we just skipped the whole load of examples at the end of the lecture notes and went straight into past paper questions.
I think that's largely been for our first supervisions, since they don't know what we've covered until then. Maths has now set us specific questions, as has physics (although he said that he wouldn't set us specific additional ones, he would mark any we hand in). Digital electronics starts this week, and was a 'go until you stop' allocation. Computer science starts this week, too, and was specific questions from the lecture notes - but he said that every week after this will be past exam questions.

The ML seems to be easier than I anticipated though.
Agreed, although I do think that there's probably a point in that they have to bring up to speed people who've never programmed before to be at least proximal to those who've undertaken substantial solo projects. I think what surprised me, actually, is the number of not just natscis, but straight compscis who hadn't programmed much or at all before.

I also find I prefer the functional style for most tasks, although there are some inherently stateful things where it just makes things unnecessarily difficult (although ML's a little better here than Haskell, I feel).

I started university at least a month after you started school, and finish at least a week before you will.
