Radiohead are an acquired taste. I can't stand OK Computer, for example, but Kid A and In Rainbows are awesome.

Coldplay? The majority of their stuff makes my ears bleed, but their latest album shocked me- it's easily the best album of last year, I'd say.

Radiohead > You

I smell a troll. Radiohead are hardly ever top of the charts.
now now, 5 UK number 1 albums (2 in the US, plus a number 2 and 3), their singles might not be top of the charts, but that's because everybody buys their albums.

Also just because they're not at the top all the time doesn't make them **** . There are some really awful songs that go into the top 10 charts

Oh I was being dim and just thinking of singles obviously :p: And I don't believe they have ever had a No #1 single - in my recollection!
No, though they've had a string of top 10s including Paranoid Android at #3 in 1997.

The fact still remains that the people who genuinely believe that Radiohead are some elusive band operating outside of the charts are completely deluded, they're probably the most successful UK album band of the past decade or so.

I define "mainstream" as something that a wide range and large quantity of people listen to. Therefore, Radiohead are mainstream.

I, however, never said that mainstream music was necessarily a bad thing. Obviously a lot of it is ****, but that's just because I don't like the music, not because it's mainstream. If something sounds good I shall listen to it, regardless of popularity.
Maybe that is the technical definition of mainstream but nowadays, in my opinion, the phrase has had a complete semantic shift to mean a sub-genre of pop generated purposely to become popular and make profit i.e. Timbaland's productions and anything by the Black Eyed Peas. If you asked your general Black Eyed Peas fan about Radiohead, they probably wouldn't be able to name one of their songs or they may even not even know who the band are.
