Why because YOU say so ?

First of all pride is not rational or irrational it is a feeling, whether you liberal socialists choose to accept it or not.

I am proud of my ancestors and their achievments, that does not mean I take credit for them. That pride in my fellow Britons and my ancestors drives me to better myself.
Who are you to actually say to someones face "you can't be proud of achievements you werent proud of" Whta gives you the right ot tell people what they should be proud of and what they should not.

I would never criticise you for not being proud of Britains achivements because I have no right to tell you what to be proud of. However, the trouble with you liberal socialist types is that you are a satire of yourself, you contradict your tolerance. You refuse to accept any other opinion but yourself.

I am proud of my country, my ancestors, their history and their achievments and I will be ****ed if some arse is going to tell me I should not be.
I'm not a liberal socialist, far from it. Please don't assume things from short posts. I was just a bit annoyed that a user was dismissed as a tree hugging idiot just for expressing his opinions in a coherent way, even though I didn't agree with most of them.
It's normal to feel pride, but simple admiration and love are way more constructive emotions. More often than not, pride degenerates into a mix of a sense of entitlement, defensiveness, and contempt for others. With all due respect, elements of each are clearly present in your post. See how quickly you were brought to anger by a single line I wrote. You made "liberal socialist" sound like a terrible insult when it is a political opinion shared by many intelligent people, even in the UK. It's because pride has this perverse effect on people that I avoid it and wish people would do the same.

Why should we accept Muslims into this country ?
That's exactly the sort of attitude I'm talking about. Muslims have every right to stay on this land weather you like it or not. So if a muslim is born here, they should go back to the parents country? **** off!

I am extremely proud to be British. I genuinely believe that it is the most prestigious and respected nationality on the planet.
I also think it has one of the greatest histories, and well let's face it...we freakin' ruled the world with the empire. So much achieved whilst being a tiny little island.

Britain proved that brains is the best weapon of all :yep: I'm very patriotic about this country, even though I'm British-Asian (of arab descent) but I would die fighting for this country any day of the week :yep:

People find this odd but I still somewhat hold traditional imperialist ideals and philosophies, I'm very proud of the British empire and wish it still existed today at the scale it did a century ago. Although I don't agree with the methods and the injustice of the regime, especially as my grandfather and great grandfather were at the receiving end of the brutality.

However, I'm absolutely ashamed and embarrassed of current british society, culture, economy, politics...and the damn people! It angers me that the **** population is damaging this once-great country. I'm afraid Britain is no longer a progressive nation, nor a prosperous one.

I used to complain a lot before but that's because in my mind I still believed that we're one of the greatest countries on the planet. But now I've had to come to terms with this country just being a shadow of it's former-self, just filled with poverty and problems and no more prosperity. We have fallen behind other countries so much it's unbelievable.

19-20th century Britain all the way :yep:
In fact, this to a tee. :five:

According to Wikepedia, "At its height it [the British Empire] was the largest empire in history and, for over a century, was the foremost global power."

It's so great to be a Briton we are so proud.

    PS. America sucks http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/images/icons/icon10.gif
Please change the name of this to:
Don't you just love being British?

The current title doesn't read right.

Make yourself clear next time.

If muslims which to integrate into your way of British life that's up to them. If you choose to accept them for who they are, that's up to you. I really couldn't a **** if you hate muslims or don't want to accept them into this society they were born into.

I just want to point out that being on an island was actually a great advantage! It makes wars avoidable, seas controllable, invasion very difficult... lol counter intuitive isn't it?

I like being British. I recognise the advantages I have had by being brought up in this country that I wouldn't have had in other places. But proud? Why would I be proud of something I can't control, and in the case of the Empire, doesn't even exist anymore? The British Empire isn't something we should be holding on to - it is essential that we let go of this exploitative past and progress into an inclusive, open society.
Do you mean just sign over land that people died for in the past? I don't think so.

Anyway, I would just like to say to you that being a fair and open society is what everyone wants, but this does not mean treating the majority like dirt.

I've been lucky enough to travel to a number of other countries, and all I can say is that muslims and other cultures in general are really well integrated in Britain by comparison. There's way less tension... at least in London, it don't know about the rest.

So basically don't let yourself get worried about the comments a single person. Life is better than it seems. Cheers

Actually the British were pretty decent to the Indians when compared with the Americans. That's why they almost all supported us in the American War of Independence and the War of 1812.

No they didn't. I'm sure the Nationalist bull-**** stories tell you it was the evil English who stopped Welsh being spoken in schools - in reality, in the Victorian era education was a responsibility of local school boards and, latterly, county councils. Indeed, if the Welsh language was discouraged, it was by Welsh people. They realised, as I'm sure certain English people did, that being monoglot speakers of a small minority language is far from a good thing.

Not to mention Wales was not an imperial possession, it was part of the mother country.
That's not what it says in my history book. It says it was brought about by the British Empire who thought all Great Britain should speak English.

This link describes most of what my book says http://www.suite101.com/content/the-welsh-not-a50231

It's not a dead language though and many people still speak it as do many Welsh towns up north and mid Wales mainly.. I am currently relearning it as I have forgotten quite a bit.

I like (love may be too strong) Britain, certainly, but the place of my birth really has little bearing on myself. Hence I do not see the sense of national pride; it is pride at a coincidence over which one has no control.

More to the point, why should we not? I for one love that Britain is multicultural. Why do you view homogeneity as a good thing?
