I'm in year 7 and I'm predicted 9 A*s and a 1st class honours degree. My dad is the surgeon general.

??? All of my siblings achieved A*/A in their A2 and my dad is confident that I'll do the same aswell. I'm not thinking about degree yet, however Medicine or Neurosurgeon will be the path I'll follow.

    Career: Pharmacist

Why: Too queasy and dumb for medicine and I like the lifestyle of a pharmacist (hours, pay, progression), its the most appealing of healthcare positions to me tbh

Steps: Just finished Chem, Bio, Geog and Philosophy Of Religion AS levels hoping for a's in all but chemistry (screw that), done about 5 weeks pharmacy work experience n loved it etc
    What about optometry?
Pay and progression isn't great in pharmacy btw, too many graduates

In a perfect world - a university lecturer. But I can't afford to do an MA+PhD. So in reality - a school teacher. It's better than min wage and irregular hours, it's a decent profession and it's more secure than what I currently do.

    Intended career: Optometry.
    Steps taken: studying B.Optom degree.
Reasoning: Decent pay, (not amazing until you get up into managerial stuff or open your own practice), and I couldn't stand to do an office job which is what I always imagine most 'general' graduates go into. I love working with people and I know people tend to like me too, so I think it's a good use of my skills. Plus, eyes are fascinating in general, haha.
    Why not an Ophthalmologist?

    Nah that's banking.

Dentistry will give you a comfortable enough income (though obviously there are the crazy exceptions with crazy money), and you can probably get a pretty enough girlfriend, probably an intelligent one if you want that.

Medicine's actually apparently better for picking up chicks, because the thick ones are turned on by the idea that you'll be "saving lives" and have this "hero" idea of you.

True, although, dont have much free time to pick up chicks in medicine at all.
Don't like the idea of selling my soul or crazy intense office, backstabbing, working hours in banking - pay is good though lol

veterinary medicine, probably will try and obtain a clinical specialism.

Did a lot of work experience at vets and farms and things to get onto my course, and doing a lot more as part of the course requirements. Doing an intercalated degree in Comparative Pathology next year to make me more competitive when applying for internship and residency programmes that are needed to gain a clinical specialism, as well as making it easier to do postgrad study or research if I want. Currently doing a summer studentship in a lab for the same reason.

As for why I want to do it; it fits my interests, challenging and rewarding work, pays reasonably well, carries quite a lot of prestige.

    Why not an Ophthalmologist?
Because that requires medicine and then specialising and I haven't got the grades for medicine. And I don't believe I'd be fantastic at doing surgery (I assume that's something every ophtlalmologist has to do).
I'm content with Optometry. I like the stuff we do.

Dunno if prestige exists anymore tbh. Out of medics/dentists/vets dentists probably get the most **** from people. Vets and dentists get called rip offs by the public all the time unfortunately.
Its unfortunate because only a few people know how bloody hard it is to get into one of these courses and complete it - not to mention the cost of overheads etc, so we dont actually make that much.
